Ice Center / De IJskelders Ice Center / De IJskelders — Vrije Universiteit Brussel They were built in 1874 and 1894 by entrepreneur and mason Jean-Philippe Somereyns.

The former ice cellars in Oudergem (Brussels) with an area of 600 square meters and a depth of ten meters are as big as a church nave. Strategically located near barracks and breweries, they were used for storing natural ice harvested in the nearby ponds, and later industrial ice. These cellars of extraordinary dimensions consist of two large inground spaces. The walls are nearly 80 cm thick and are composed of two double rows of bricks on both sides of a central cavity, the so-called air space. Like the six vaults they are built entirely of local bricks called Brussels "moef". The curved floor facilitates the reception and evacuation of the water when the ice melts. The ice cellars are a protected monument since 1993. They are owned by the nearby Vrije Universiteit Brussel and restored by Origin Architecture & Engineering. Unfortunately today the ice cellars are not accessible due to building plans on the site.
