On Thursday 2 and Friday 3 July 2026, PoHis will host the international workshop ‘Conservative Women: Politics and Gender from 19th century – 21th century’.

In this workshop, we will explore the role of women in conservative political movements since the nineteenth century. To what extent is female involvement in right wing, nationalist and conservative movements a new phenomenon or can longer patterns and lineages be discerned? What were and are the motivations of women to take part in these movements and what are their strategies? Do they participate despite or because of the often explicitly patriarchal and masculinist rhetoric of these movements? How should we evaluate the impact female involvement has on right wing political movements? We aim to bring together approaches from the study of conservatism and the (radical) right with insights from gender and women’s history and politics.

🎙️ Nieuwe podcastreeks – Academie voor Voetbalcultuur

Tijdens het WK 2026 neemt de UAntwerpen - Faculteit Letteren en Wijsbegeerte je mee op ontdekkingstocht naar de cultuur achter voetbal. Docenten en onderzoekers geven je een inkijk in de verschillende aspecten die voetbalcultuur bepalen. Ze doen dat telkens vanuit hun eigen expertise op het gebied van geschiedenis, talen of filosofie. Ook verschillende leden van PoHis en het Centre for Urban History - CSG - University of Antwerp zullen hun expertise delen:

- Maandag 15/6: Vincent Scheltiens over twee spelers van Racing Santander die in 1975 met een zwarte band speelden als protest tegen de laatste executies onder het franquisme.
- Woensdag 17/6: Margot Luyckfasseel en Pauline Malenga Mwanga over de Congolese Léopards die voor het eerst sinds 1974 opnieuw aantreden op een WK-mannenvoetbal.
- Donderdag 18/6: Marnix Beyen over de doorwerking van het oorlogen van de jaren 1990 in de Bosnische voetbalcultuur.
- Zaterdag 20/6: Kas Swerts en Nick Majchrowicz over "Distels, kilts en nationale liederen: waarom elk sportevenement steeds kopzorgen biedt voor het Verenigd Koninkrijk".
- Maandag 22/6: Marnix Beyen over "de doorwerking van het Portugese kolonialisme in de Kaapverdische voetbalcultuur."
- Dinsdag 23/6: Peter Stabel over referenties naar de middeleeuwen in de zelfrepresentatie van nationale ploegen.
- Zaterdag 27/6: Margo Buelens-Terryn over "pride op het WK" (n.a.v. de pride match Egypte-Iran en de controverse errond).
- Donderdag 9/7: Marnix Beyen over "Waarom Filip Dewinter een fan is van de Kroatische nationale ploeg"
- Zaterdag 11/7: Oscar Gelderblom over de vraag hoe het met de Oranjegekte stond bij het WK van 1978.
- Woensdag 15/7: Marnix Beyen over "vrouwenvoetbal als tegencultuur".

🤝This week, our PoHis members went on their annual team-building excursion, this time visiting the Boekentoren in Ghent.

Hendrik Defoort, historian and collection manager at Ghent University Library, guided us on a tour through the modernist library, highlighting its architecture and collection of books and archival materials. Many thanks to Hendrik for this fascinating tour, and to Maarten Van Ginderachter for organising yet another fun team-building edition!

📢 Publiekslezing — Onvoltooid verleden. Spanjes worsteling met de erfenis van de dictatuur — Vincent Scheltiens

Vijftig jaar na de dood van Francisco Franco blijft Spanje worstelen met de erfenis van burgeroorlog, dictatuur en een onvoltooide democratische transitie. De overgang naar democratie werd internationaal geprezen als een model van consensus en verzoening, maar ging ook gepaard met straffeloosheid en collectief stilzwijgen over het geweld van het verleden.

In deze publiekslezing onderzoekt dr. Vincent Scheltiens hoe dat onverwerkte verleden vandaag nog steeds doorwerkt in de Spaanse politieke en maatschappelijke actualiteit. Tegelijk stelt hij een bredere en actuele vraag: wat gebeurt er wanneer democratische rechten en vrijheden onder druk komen te staan, en kan een samenleving ook in omgekeerde richting van democratie naar dictatuur schuiven?

Tomorrow, 13 May, UAntwerp PoHis-postdoc Charris De Smet will participate in a digital round table organised by the Université Lumière Lyon 2 as part of the first European Doctoral Day. This day aims to highlight the pivotal role of PhD holders and of doctoral education in driving scientific excellence, innovation, and societal progress - both within academia and beyond. A series of 170 events will be taking place across Europe for this first edition. During this webinar focussed on internationalisation, Charris will talk about her doctoral studies, and in particular her experiences abroad.

🇬🇷 Afgelopen week vertrokken de studenten van het mastervak Politieke Geschiedenis Lab Casus Balkan naar jaarlijkse traditie op buitenlandse excursie, dit jaar opnieuw naar Thessaloniki.

Tijdens diverse bezichtigingen, lezingen en stadswandelingen ontdekten de studenten de verschillende lagen van de rijke politieke, sociale en culturele geschiedenis van Thessaloniki, waar de sporen van het Hellenistische, Romeinse, Byzantijnse, Ottomaanse en modern-Griekse erfgoed nog steeds zichtbaar zijn. Zo bezocht de groep onder andere de archeologische site van Vergina. 👇

🎤Research presentation at Maison Suger, Paris

Tomorrow, 16 April, PoHis-postdoc Charris De Smet will present her research at Maison Suger in Paris as part of her research stay. In her presentation titled “'This Is Not Politics': Female Editors and Their 'Political' Engagement in 19th-Century Parisian Fashion Press”, she will discuss her current research project in which she re-examines the question of women's political agency in the mainstream, non-militant Parisian women's press. Her research questions how fashion newspapers served as a forum for female editors, writers and a disenfranchised female readership to engage in the political arena between 1815 and 1851.

Uitgeverij Ertsberg en auteurs Vincent Scheltiens Ortigosa (UAntwerp PoHis (Power in History) - Centre for Political History) en Sven Tuytens (VRT) nodigen u van harte uit voor de voorstelling van hun nieuwe boek In Spaanse loopgraven. België en de Spaanse burgeroorlog (1936-1939).

In dit boek wordt de Belgische betrokkenheid bij de Spaanse Burgeroorlog grondig belicht. Van de 2.400 Belgische vrijwilligers die naar Spanje trokken om de democratische Tweede Republiek te steunen, tot de 300 die nooit terugkeerden, en de vele anderen die zich aansloten bij de Internationale Brigaden. Het boek behandelt ook de rol van België in de illegale wapenhandel naar Spanje, en de opvang van 5.000 kinderen uit republikeinse gebieden. Dit alles gebeurt tegen de achtergrond van de opkomst van fascisme en de impact van de oorlog op de Belgische politiek en samenleving.

New PoHis member! 👋

Nick Majchrowicz joins UAntwerp PoHis (Power in History) - Centre for Political History) as a PhD student under the supervision of Marnix Beyen-Van Bragt (UAntwerpen) and Kas Swerts (ADVN/KU Leuven). This PhD results from a collaboration between PoHis and ADVN - archief voor nationale bewegingen, where Nick works. His research focuses on the (anti-)imperial component of the so-called ‘Dietse gedachtegoed’ [Dietse ideology] during the interwar period (1918-1940).

Whilst in the 19th century, the term ‘Diets’ simply referred to the Dutch language, it took on political overtones in Great-Netherlandisch circles following the First World War. Their dream was to establish ‘Dietsland’, a new Dutch-speaking nation mainly comprised of the Netherlands and Flanders – although this could vary – which was, through the transnational ideas of ‘stamverwantschap’ [Kinship], connected with South African Afrikaners. However, these Diets-oriented circles did not stop at nationalistic goals but also eagerly wrote about (their own (anti-)imperialist ambitions.

The primary aim of this research is to raise awareness of this topic by shedding light on the imperialist imaginations of Dietse movements, parties, and individuals, while also highlighting the presence of this imperialism in archival collections such as that of the ADVN. The study focuses on the authors, the sociocultural implications of such imperial ambitions, and the tensions between Dietse organisations and international/imperial influences. The research is predominantly based on documents, newspapers, and publications from Diets-oriented organisations from Flanders/Belgium and the Netherlands.

The pictures below show articles written in Diets-orientated newspapers, such as the right-wing authoritarian Verbond der Dietsche Nationaal Solidaristen (Verdinaso) ‘Hier Dinaso!’. Verdinaso distinguished itself from other Diets-oriented organisations by its pronounced imperialist ambitions, with its imagined Diets Empire possessing a colonial empire/commonwealth (see map). Whilst ‘Dietsche Voorpost’, who were opponents of such a Diets colonial empire, attacked the Verdinaso leader, Joris Van Severen, for such ideas (Sources provided by ADVN).
