Nieuwe Tijdinghen 1626 issue 68 (20 June) with news from Prague, the Margraviate of Brandenburg (x2), and Venice.

PRAGUE, 30 May: Yesterday a courier from the Duke of Bavaria arrived with letters to raise troops and provide assistance to the Emperor against the rebellious peasantry on the Ens. At once two cavalry companies and as many infantry were sent thither.
At Coning Gratz in Bohemia the peasants beat the dean to death.
They write from Preslaw that the princely diet had not concluded and that post from the imperial court was expected.
They write from Spain that 40 galleons under the Biscayner Arrasburn had set out to meet the Silver Fleet, and Don Frederico de Toledo is also preparing his fleet at Lisbon.

MARK BRANDENBURG, 26 May: Last week the Elector of the Brandenburg’s newly recruited troops under Colonel Crachy were lodged in Brandenburg, Plauw, Sendel, Garleben, and other places, replacing Mansfeld’s troops who had marched out of those parts. And although the citizens were unanimously resolved to avenge their losses on the 1,000 Mansfelders that were marching out under Colonel Butlitz, Colonel Cracht (not having orders to that effect) would in no wise consent to the citizenry’s resolution, so they are now scattered here and there on the poor peasantry, molesting the same by one means and another. As soon as this was known, the Brandenburg soldiers attacked them in those quarters, chasing them from the territory in shame. The Count of Mansfeld is still at Havelberch, where he is ensconcing strongly. Most of the troops are gathering with him. Some of his cavalry, now on the road, and plundering the poor folk, were last week lodged in the villages around the little town of Nopoin, and desired quarters by force, which citizens roundly refused, and unanimously swore to lose all they have, honour, body and life, rather than admit the Mansfelders. At last 200 of the youngest citizens sallied out, and drove the said cavalrymen from those quarters by force. That same night, they set fire to another place, but it is not clearly known whether it was the little town of Verbelin or another. Colonel Fuchs and Colonel Lohausen have built strong sconces in and around Tangermunda and completed an encampment.

VENICE: Letters from Milan say that the Pope’s troops had been mustered and paid and will soon head to Riva, and that the Duke of Feria had departed from Alessandria. He will take ship at Votri and sail to Spain.
We are informed from Turin that on 14 May all the soldiery in Vercelli and Sauthir, foot and horse, were mustered, and all warlike preparations being made, and that an attempt would soon be made to take back Hormea, so the Genoese have again sent troops thither and to other places.
The excellent Senate has appointed the illustrious Serlorenzo Moresini as captain, and Peronmio Bondarmier as governor of the two new galleons, which are to convoy the ships sailing to and from the Levant.
By the letters from Constantinople we understand that many Jewish houses and shops have been burned there, and great harm done. Further that many soldiers are gathering to reinforce the Turkish army by Babilonica, and to resist the rebel Pasha of Jerusalem.
Disagreements have arisen between the viceroys of Algier and Tunis, so that they are each arming against the other. In Aleppo two richly laden caravans arrived from Persia. The plague waxes greatly in the kingdoms of Algiers and Tunis.

MARK BRANDENBURG, 2 June: There is not much news here, except that on 27 May the king of Denmark’s ambassador had a good audience with his electoral grace. His proposition is being kept secret. He was sent away at 1, and on 28 May travelled to his electoral grace of Saxony. Meanwhile, Duke Bernaerdt of Weinmar on the same day travelled to the army at Tangermunden. It is given out here that the king of Denmark is requesting to have his headquarters at Garleben, to have that city to his fortification, so that he should at all times be close to the army.

Nieuwe Tijdinghen 1626 issue 67 (20 June) with news from Constantinople, Italy, France, Calais, Cologne and England.

CONSTANTINOPLE: The Turk lately having besieged the city of Babylon, which the Persian took from him some years since, and the Persians driving the Turkish army thence, the Turk has again assembled many Janissaries and other soldiers to besiege the same city of Babylon again. But when they heard what sort of general the Turk had appointed to command them, they refused to serve under him, so that a great mutiny arose amongst them. And when the Pasha of Buda had begun to arm, at the great insistence of Bethlen Gabor, put to it by the Turk’s Lutheran and Calvinist friends in Germany, the Turk commanded him to disarm, which he was obliged to do.
This falls out badly for the rebel peasants in Upper Austria, who at the urging of their recalcitrant heretical preachers, fearing they should lose their Lutheran divine word and their Calvinist divine word, have rebelled against the Emperor and the Duke of Bavaria, the Lutherans using as their insignia a white cross on the breast.

ITALY: The Duke of Savoy is beginning to disarm and has cashiered part of his cavalry for lack of money to pay them further.
He is also ill content with the king of France, on whom he much relied, not finding the effects of his assistance to be what he had thought.
Also having heard that a million and a half in silver had been sent by sea from Spain to Genoa, and that the ships or galleys carrying the silver were forced by contrary winds to put into the port of Marseille in France. There they were allowed freely to enter and to depart, and treated well and civilly, without any seizure, harm or prevention done them.

FRANCE: The king had gone to Bloys with an army of 8,000 foot and 2,000 horse, but to what intention is unknown.

CALAIS: Four ships of the new Admiralty in Spain coming by Ireland to go to Dunkirk were encountered by some Dutch warships not far from the Flemish Coast, and one of these four ships surrendered to the Dutch. They write that some of the Dutchmen on board had gone over to the service of the king of Spain in Brazil, and these were so numerous that they overpowered the other seamen, and so put out their boat, and themselves brought the enemy aboard, as perfidious traitors, and it is thought this ship was brought to Rotterdam.
Another of these ships made it to Dunkirk, another to Calais, and it is said the fourth was sunk by the enemy.

COLOGNE: Those of Friesland not having been willing to consent to any new great taxation that was to be imposed on them, and some in Leeuwarden having spoken very mischievously against the tyrannous government of the States, Count Ernest of Nassau was sent thither by the States, to lay the heads of some of these mischief-speaking citizens at their feet. But the citizens having been forewarned did not prevent his entry, but once he was in laid hold of him and demanded to know what his intention was, and saying that now they had him they required a reckoning of how the money they had already given had been employed.
Before this occurred in Leeuwarden they had thought to commit a stratagem in Groningen, which also failed, and which was that he had thought to bring in 1,000 more soldiers in than were there before, with which to tyrannise over the citizens as he pleased. He had commanded that he would have the soldiers lodged within the city pass muster outside the city, only leaving in the city those with sentry duty at the gates. But when he was busy with his muster outside, the citizens were informed by some of the peasantry that a thousand soldiers were lying in ambush, to mingle with the garrison and so come into the city as though they were the same troops that had marched out to pass muster. At this the citizenry came to arms and disarmed the soldiers standing sentry at the gates, and closed the gates, and it is said fired heavy guns at Count Ernest, with an iron ball flying through his coach.
They also write from Cologne that there has been a great disturbance at Amsterdam, with those who put their money into the East Indies Company demanding a reckoning of their coins, which which fall out badly for that company, which can provide neither capital nor interest, they have prospered so well in their East Indies trade.

ENGLAND: The king and the parliament agree very poorly. He desires money of the parliament, and the parliament desires that he allow them to investigate and examine the accusations against the Duke of Buckingham, who amongst other crimes is accused of having poisoned the king’s father. Notwithstanding this, the king will not allow them to bring him before the law.

Nieuwe Tijdinghen 1626 issue 66 (17 June) with news from Vienna (about the outbreak of a peasant revolt in Upper Austria), Flanders and Brandenburg.

VIENNA, 27 May: Last week the peasants above the Ens, 10,000 strong, again began to revolt against the emperor, and united together, and took several villages and small towns, such as Dachsbergh, Grieszkirchen, Barty, and other places, and burned down and plundered Peurbach and Watzenkirchen, having struck down and piteously murdered many men, women, children and servants, and some priests, and are still daily doing great harm by robbing, burning and murdering. They set fire to the goods, houses and gardens of all who will not unite with them, and take the lords and gentlemen captive, and carry them off, and the rebellious peasantry strengthen themselves daily. They have taken the artillery and the weapons of the captured places and castles, arming and strengthening themselves, so that they have twelve artillery pieces with them.
The Lord Count of Herberstorff, governor of Lintz, has marched with many cavalry and infantry to scatter the peasants and capture their commanders, or battle the peasantry, and had thought to encircle them. But the peasants were in a valley or dale where they had fortified themselves, so the Count marched towards them, and but his regiment in broad battle order, keeping some of his men hidden behind a mountain. The lord governor thought that he had Victory in his hands, and gathered his men together, at which the peasants massed and drew on, advancing upon the governor’s troops, so that several died on either side.
Many are of opinion that a lot of local nobility and deserted soldiers are amongst these peasants, inciting and stiffening them.
His electoral grace of Bavaria, hearing of these rebellious peasants, is on the move with his troops, as is the Bishop of Zaltzburgh, who are at once sending 2,000 infantry and 1,000 horse, already on the march, and troops drawing thither from every side towards these peasants, so it is hoped the fire may soon be extinguished.
Further, praise God, things are very quiet at Vienna and in Hungary, and it is thought his imperial majesty will travel to Prague, and thence to Nuremberg.
We hear now that this regiment of peasants was planned for some time, and Mansfeld, before he was lately beaten by the emperor’s men, had thought to join his troops with these peasants, and so to work from two sides, with the Danes and Dutch on one side, for the Dutch seek to put a stick through the spokes wherever they can.

FLANDERS: Just before Whitsun the Dutch planned a treason, being ready on the water with two warships and many sloops, near Axel in Flanders. They had some peasants living in Flanders near Axel to do their bidding, intending when the enemy came there, to set fires in three places in the village of Moerbeke and the parish of Stekene in the land of Waas, and to seize the wealthiest of the village. They were discovered, and two of the traitors caught and carried to the castle at Rupelmonde. One of these traitors hanged himself in prison, and the other was hanged over against Axel on the d**e in the sight of those of Axel. The one who had hanged himself was gibbeted next to the gallows. One of the two was called Hans Pannekoeck. It is said they had been planning their treason for eight or nine years. Their accomplices escaped. There is nothing better than keeping good watch.

MARK BRANDENBURG: Mansfeld is still at Havelbergh, and his troops at Prignitz. People are unhappy with his troops, for they keep house very badly. They are gone from Brandenburg, and his electoral grace’s troops have occupied the place. In Alten Marck, things are as they were before, for the troops remain lodged there, as do the imperial troops.
The Count of Zwartzsenburgh has returned to Berlin from Transylvania, but what he brings is yet unknown.

COLOGNE: We understand here that an army my come by the Rhine, as a bridge is being built at Rheinberg, on which they are labouring strongly, and news has come that two more companies from Fugger’s Regiment are passing towards the Rhine. The Dutch troops awaited them, but the governor of Wesel hearing that those of Rees and Emmerick were out with two companies, lay in wait for them in turn, and chased the enemy from the field.

VIENNA: As both their imperial majesties, as well as his Hungarian royal majesty, are to travel from this land to Bohemia, and thence to the diet at Nuremberg, they summoned the lords and council of Hungary, with the foremost lords of this land, to keep everything in good order in the absence of their imperial and royal majesties.
On Monday evening his imperial majesty and the king of Hungary came here, and the following Tuesday had audience with the Hungarian lord judges, and afterwards had a proposition presented to them.
At 3 in the afternoon their majesties again departed hence to Laxenburg. The Hungarian lord estates at once, joyfully took the proposition under deliberation in the Newe Burck, where they are assembling, to give it mature consideration.
Yesterday evening their imperial majesties were again here, to hear what the Hungarian lords had agreed or to confirm the same, and as the rogation days were at hand his majesty remained here to join the procession.
Yesterday evening Lord Gerhard of Questenbergh of his imperial majesty’s court council of war arrived here with the 37 banners and cornets captured from Mansfeld, which he presented to his imperial majesty, but the captured commanders were left in the army. His grace the old Lord Count of Altan is expected here hourly with the Turkish peace.

ROME: The Marquis of Tavarra, who is the new Viceroy of Sicily, has arrived here, and the Count of Ogniate is also soon expected.
We understand that the kingdom of Barcelona has promised the king of Spain 3 millions, over a 12 year period, at which his majesty has confirmed their privileges.

VENICE: They write from Naples that there were 15 galleys ready in the harbour there, to carry 3,000 men to Genoa, and commissions were to be issued to appoint two colonels to recruit 6,000 men, general over whom would be the Duke of Bovino.

ECCLESIASTICAL TERRITORY OF FULDA, 24 May: Yesterday Holsteyn’s troops from all quarters around here assembled by the town of Fuld, and today they marched to Blanckenau and took their way with the Lüneburg troops towards Wetteraw, where they are be mustered. Close to 200 [10-bushel] measures of corn have been brought from Wirtzburgh to Fuld, both ground and baked, to be transported to his excellency Tilly’s army, and in the territory of Fulda there are still 200 cavalrymen with some musketeers, waiting to convoy the aforesaid provisions.

HESSE: Last Friday morning, Colonel Cronbergh with 60 horse marched past Hirschfeld towards Kame and Fulda, marching through the night. And early on the morning of the 26th his excellency Tilly marched from Breytenbach with the whole army and the next night arrived by Heyden, and lodged in the open field with his troops 2 miles from Rotenberch, and then marched onwards towards Weyssensteyn, near Cassel, where his excellency Tilly is now lodged. It is said he is making for Munden, but the truth is not known for certain, for the secrets of princes or lords are wondrous.

HESSE, 27 May: Today the troops that were lodged by Hirschvelt marched on, whither is as yet unknown. It is said the cavalry that lodged at Vacha have joined with them.

Nieuwe Tijdinghen 1626 issue 64 (8 June) with news of Tilly's success in Hesse.

HESSE: News of how his excellency the General Count Tilly retook the foremost places there, and cut off the passage of Duke Christian of Brunswick, drawn from a creditworthy account of which the copy is here printed, translated from High German into our Dutch speech. The daily tidings before this brought, and continue to bring, how the peasants of Hesse opposed the imperial soldiery, and many were defeated, which may be the cause that Duke Christian of Brunswick marched into Hessian territory, to disturb and prevent the contentment and enjoyment of the imperial troops.
The consequences will be seen from the following account:
We would not keep from your worship how as soon as his messenger to us had again departed, Adjutant Boromer came here, sent by his excellency from Hessian territory to the Lord Count of Anholt, promising as soon as he returned to bring news that was still being kept secret. Among other things he says that in Hesse Aldendorff, Rottenburch, Eszwech, Hirsvelt and a town between Rotenburch and Hiersfeldt have been won, and all the peasantry, Reformed and soldiers found there struck down, and the mayor of Rotenborch taken prisoner. Several others will be hanged. His excellency’s quarter is currently lodged in Hessian territory, near Esbeg under Hirszvelt, and will remain there until the adjutant returns. His excellency intends to lodge between Munden and Cassel.
In this skirmish, the young Count Hoffmeester was captured. Also a captain, and a doctor from Cassel. And a captain and a lieutenant are to be hanged. The peasantry of the four towns, with the Reformed and the Officers who have been captured, were disarmed together with the citizenry, not allowing them even to keep a knife. We yesterday got 2,000 rapiers, as well as the banner of Duke Christian or Halberstadt’s commissary.
Lieutenant Colonel Waldt lies at Eswegh, and it is said his excellency and Walsteyn have cut off the passage of Duke Christian or Halberstadt.
The provisions of corn, wine, meal and suchlike that the Landgrave of Hesse had at Roodenburch, Aldenburch, and Hirszvelt, have now come into his excellency’s hands.
Yesterday 30,000 loaves were sent to the army from Fulda. Great oxen and cows can be bought a thaler apiece, there was so much b***y.
Likewise one can by six sheep for a thaler, and furthermore gained even greater b***y, and the said adjutant showed his bloodied sword, with which he had cut off a captain’s head.
The mayor of Hirszveldt was stabbed, but the apothecary, who was rich, has been captured.
And he related it for certain that as the enemy is lodged at Wolfshaghen, which is too close to us although it is three miles away, the Lord Lieutenant Colonel Count Spor, who currently has his quarters at Corbach, is day and night sending about a hundred cavalrymen to Wolfshaghen to see whither that enemy, and the Count of Solms, intend to go.
New cavalrymen are constantly being sent thither, and within a week we will have news.

MARSBURG, 20 May: There is currently fresh news that the aforesaid count’s regiment has been wholly dispersed.

ANOTHER: Colonels Erwite and Lindtlo have routed five companies of Danish soldiers by the River Weser and taken four banners. This is what has happened here.

Nieuwe Tijdinghen 1626 issue 63 (8 June) with news from Thuringia (x3), Cologne, Rome, Wroclaw, Venice, Aschersleben, Brandenburg, Alte Markt, Stolberg, and Upper Hesse.

THURINGIA, 18 May: The Count of Merode and his men are still lodged in the villages subject to Gleich and Weimar. He is asking Erfurt for 100,000 guilders, or quarters, even though the Duke of Friedlant had granted the town of Erfurt safeguard for a sum of money, which was distributed to the imperial soldiery by grant of the council.

THURINGIA, 19 May: The head or Amtman of Friedenwalt came from Hirschveldt to read agreement with his excellency Tilly and deliver the town to him, and agreement was reached towards the evening of the same day, 18 May. When the imperial troops entered there had bot been time enough for the Landgrave’s troops to evacuate the town, so many of the Landgrave’s men were cut down. Tilly’s men began to plunder the town, but a prohibition was immediately issued and proclaimed, on bodily punishment, of harming any. But hereabouts outside the town, many villages and lordly houses were robbed and plundered, and the soldiers took many horses, oxen, cows, and sheep, sending them away by night, and making their way to Fulda. Where they will march next, time will tell.
Mad Halberstadt and his men have marched back to their old quarters at Nordheym, Gottingen, and Munden. It is said the king of Denmark has marched with his army.

COLOGNE: Recently, near Lippstadt, a Duke of Weimar was captured who had been lieutenant colonel in the Danish army. He had come from Soest, but with what intention is unknown.

ROME: His holiness has travelled to Castel Gandolfo, where he is to remain some days. Cardinal S. Susanna and Constable Colonna have departed for Loreto.
They write from Spain that three weeks ago there was another great flood, due to the rain, that has done great damage.

BRESLAU: On 11 May the imperial proposition was made here.
His imperial majesty firstly requests the princes and estates of the territory for 150,000 Reichsthalers as travelling money or expenses for his journey to the imperial diet in Nuremberg.
Secondly, 150,000 thalers to maintain and preserve the Hungarian frontier places or towns.
Thirdly, 150,000 Reichsthalers to pay the imperial army in the Lower Saxon Circle.
Fourthly, that the newly recruited troops that the territorial estates have raised be given to imperial service for three months, and maintained and paid.

VENICE, 15 May: On Sunday the soldiery of his holiness arrived at Lake Como, to sail to Riva.
The Republic of Genoa has sent many soliders to the Riviera of Ponentte, because the Duke of Savoy has 2,000 men, with some artillery pieces, around Mondovi, Ceva, and other places, who had been at S. Remo and robbed and drove away 500 head of livestock there.
They write from Spain that Don Piedre de Toledo has been appointed General of the Fleet, and Don Diego de Massia General of Cavalry in the Low Countries.

ASCHERSLEBEN, 15 May: News has come here from Colonel Altringer that Colonel Fuchs with most of the king of Denmark’s army and Mansfeld’s remaining men wish to besiege the town of Zerbst and our sconce at Dessau, and we understand that the king of Denmark intends to attempt the imperial city of Goszlaer, so we have to watch on two sides to resist them, but praise God it is good that Colonel Gall Pieter’s Croats and Colonel Merode’s 6,000 Walloons are at work here, while the Duke of Holsteyn is mustering his half regiment in the territory of Hesse, and the other half will also be mustered there within the fortnight.
Duke George of Lunenborgh and Frants Albrecht of Saxony have also travelled to the regiment to muster in the Wesserau.
His excellency the Count of t’Serclaes Tilly and Mad Halberstadt pursue one another near Gottinghen and Northeimb. They cannot well meet, Mad Halberstadt retreating hither and thither, and it being hard to bring together sufficient victuals to feed such large armies, for the land is everywhere consumed and despoilted.
Further, there was such a great storm, that lightning hit a powder tower in Gottinghen, which did great harm.

MARGRAVIATE OF BRANDENBURG, 18 May: Mansfeld still lies at Havelbergh, his remaining infantry doing great damage thereabouts. His cavalry and infantry were mustered, and are daily led to frontier places, to occupy the passages.
The Bishop of Halle was at Wolfenbüttel, and is again at Tangermundt, which is being strongly fortified.
They write from Amsterdam that two West Indies Company ships had arrived from Guinea, bringing news that both the Admirals Lamb and Vrom had besieged the Castle de Mina in Guinea, but had been surprised by the Blacks there and driven off with great losses to the Hollanders, and that Admiral From was among those killed.

ALTE MARKT: Things are not going well, as the land is being much despoiled by the soldiers. They write from Brandenburg that Mansfeld’s troops desire to depart thence, while the electoral troops are coming to the territory of Havelbergh. It is said Mansfeld wishes to march his troops to Meckelenborgh and Pomerania.

STOLBERG: There is news that the king of Denmark’s troops are gathering around Wolfenbüttel, and Colonel Fuchs has established a camp near Tangermunde, where he is strongly ensconcing himself, so it seems that the enemy will not quit the River Elbe. There is also news that Mansfeld’s troops intend to mutiny, and march to Meckelenburgh.

THURINGIA: Now as the town of Erfurt had given Merode’s troops 50,000 Reichsthalers, they have left there and marched to Donua and Ghleichsich. They have arrived in at Franckenhausen in Schwartzenburg territory, and established their muster place there.

UPPER HESSE: His excellency the Lord General Tilly is lodged with his army in Amt Rodenbergh and thereabouts, at Bebern, Breydenbach, between Hirschfelt and Rodenburg. He has already taken back the towns of Fulda and the River Weser, plundering some of them.

Nieuwe Tijdinghen 1626 issue 62 (8 June) with news from England, France, Rome, Brandenburg (x2), Venice, Hirschfeld, Hesse, Fulda, Franconia, Meissen and Prague.

ENGLAND: The parliament does not desire to grant the king any subsidy until he consents that they call his favourite, the Duke of Buckingham, to justice.
In the parliament they have learned of a booklet that a doctor of medicine of the late King James has put out in print, in which he declares that this Duke of Buckingham poisoned the present king’s father, and they have taken information and find other indications so they are very diligent to call this duke to account, and are much amazed and also very malcontent that the king should so defend his favourite and not allow him to answer the points that the parliament has against him.
In the parliament they are busy with the examination of one of their Calvinist bishops, called the Bishop of Bangor, for the many abuses and villainies that he has committed, to wit, amongst other things, that for money he promoted stableboys, tapsmen, and suchlike learned men to the service of the church.
That he would not let some marry until they had given him money for it, even making some pay a hundred guilders.
That having called certain persons into his presence to examine them, with his fists he boxed their ears to instruct them in what they should say.
The world may take this as a mirror to follow the example of these Reformed Calvinist bishops, besides a Lutheran Reformed Mad Bishop.

FRANCE: Marshal D’urnano has been imprisoned with his two brothers and certain others.

ROME: A courier has come here from Barcelona bringing news that the Lord Cardinal Legate had lain sick with a fever for a fortnight and that of the 190 persons he took with him, only 40 are healthy, the rest all having died.
Don Emanuel of Portugal’s son arrived here, making his way to Malta to be received into the Order.
At Naples there were 6,000 soldiers ready to be sent to Spain to serve with the fleet.

MARGRAVIATE OF BRANDENBURG: Colonel Fuchs is still at Tangermundt, and Mansfeld at Brandenburg. It is said they will soon march onwards. The nobility of the territory, and the citizens and peasants, are dissatisfied with them, for they are completely despoiling the land.

VENICE: They write from Milan the Duca di Feria was still at Alessandria, where he had visited the Lord Conte Gio.Serbellone Duc de Alviso, the Prince of Ascoli, and other gentlemen. It is understood that the Duke of Alcala had travelled to Savoy, to treat of weighty affairs with the duke of the same.

HIRSCHFELD: Yesterday six troops of Merode’s cavalry showed themselves outside the town, sending envoys to ask for lodging, but they were refused. While Landgrave Wilhelm of Hesse had previously made provision from the villages, th lieutenant colonel for his security took the House Eichen, and for three days demanded 1,000 pounds of bread, 7 voyers of beer, and several hundred pounds of meat, every day, which was agreed to.
We still expect two regiments of musketeers, also four companies of dragoons and three companies of cuirassiers.

HESSE: Yesterday the provisions Landgrave Wilhelm demanded were transported from Hirschfeld to Aula, and delivered there, and about midnight that night they marched thence to Grebenauw. What they intend is still unknown.
Yesterday at 8 o’clock, Mad Halberstadt’s 1,000 cavalrymen and 1,000 dragoons marched over Cassel. Anither 2,000 of Halberstadt’s men arrived by Fritzelar, determined to plunder and burn the town, at which the mayor and lords of the town begged mercy of Landgrave Maurice to prevent it, which was granted them, but within two days they had to produce enough money to recruit a regiment.

FULDA, 9 May: The Count of Merode’s Walloons, 8000 strong, have returned again, and are making their way and quarters through the territory, at Gist, Vacha, and Schmalkalden, and several hundred horse are lodged around Embteren Marckenzel, and Haselsteyn, and some at Schwantz, Buckhaun, Rodenkirchen, and other places. Those of Fulda have sent eleven wagons with provisions. It is understood that Halberstadt intends to come to the ecclesiastical territory of Fulda, so the Duke of Holsteyn intends to join with the Walloons.

BRANDENBURG, 10 May: Mansfeld has departed hence and lodged all his men in other quarters. He is returning to Havelbergh. The citizens of this city are now mounting guard themselves.
Naven, a town four miles from here, has burned down. It is said the garrison of cavalry lodged there set the town on fire, but much baggage burned too, so it is hard to believe the cavalry did it. They say the enemy did it.

FRANCONIA, 15 May: There is great perturbation concerning the assembly in the County of Wertheym, for on Monday a company of 150 horse and 50 foot raided Haybach, taking the Erbach castle and the place. Some were killed, and another company raided the lordship of Brenberghe, which it is said will be transported to Monsieur Tilly’s army.

MEISSEN, 17 May: Mansfeld is reinforcing himself again. He has joined with Colonel Fuchs and is again marching towards Zerbst.
The day before yesterday, the imperial soldiery burned down the little town of Roslouw, which belongs to the Countess of Zerbst, so that Mansfeld should not be able to ensconce himself there.

PRAGUE, 16 May: They write from Vienna that their imperial majesties will depart for Nuremberg after Corpus Christi, where the imperial diet is to take place.
Yesterday the imperial quartermaster and two foragers arrived here, to arrange places and lodgings for the court. The Bohemian Estates are gathering a lot of money for when his imperial majesty comes here.
Serini’s [Zrinski's] 1,000 Croats have arrived at Eger and the previous 500 horse under Lord Peter Gall are with Friedland’s army.
