Historians of WW1 in Belgium

Op maandag 20 mei geeft Jolien van de vuyst (Universiteit Gent) een presentatie over haar doctoraatsonderzoek naar de Belgische vluchtelingen in Birmingham (1914-1919). In deze Britse stad verbleven 5.000 Belgen.

Jolien De Vuyst onderzocht de lokale hulpverdeling (War Refugees Committee Birmingham and District): Wie organiseerde de hulpverlening? Wat hield deze hulpverlening precies in? Voor wie was de hulpverlening bedoeld? Op welke rechten konden deze Belgen op de vlucht aanspraak maken? Welke moeilijkheden ondervonden zij daarbij?

Op 23 mei stelt Dominiek Dendooven zijn nieuwe boek aan ons voor in het Inflanders Fields Museum in Ieper. In "De vergeten soldaten van de Eerste Wereldoorlog" vertelt hij het verhaal van de soldaten en arbeiders uit India en China die tijdens WO1 in Vlaanderen en Noord-Frankrijk verbleven. Kan u het geloven dat nu pas, in 2018, een eeuw na het einde van WO1, het eerste boek over de Belgische oud-strijders verschijnt? 'De overlevenden' van Martin Schoups en Antoon Vrints is daarmee een belangrijk referentiewerk over de 315.000 Belgische soldaten die WO1 overleefden.

Hun boek brengt het bijzondere politieke verhaal van deze teruggekeerde soldaten en schetst hoe de oorlog hun leven voorgoed veranderde. De oud-strijders zouden immers geen genoegen nemen met een eenvoudige terugkeer naar hun vooroorlogse bestaan. Ze waren ervan overtuigd dat ze vanwege hun oorlogsinspanning erkenning verdienden én dat ze een belangrijke, nieuwe rol te spelen hadden in de Belgische samenleving.

Van bij hun terugkeer zouden de oud-strijders zich als een bijzonder aanwezige en strijdlustige groep ontpoppen, die het Belgische establishment zowel in de dorps- als in de Wetstraat regelmatig kopzorgen bezorgde.

Le 11 décembre, Emmanuel Debruyne présentera à l'UCL son nouveau livre sur les 'femmes à Boches'.

Pendant les quatre ans de la Grande Guerre, le corps féminin est l’enjeu de tensions incessantes en pays occupé. « Sources de contamination » pour les uns, « femmes à Boches » pour les autres, celles qui fréquentent l’ennemi font les frais de leur choix. Ostracisées sous l’occupation, tondues à la libération, puis disparues une fois la paix revenue. Cent ans après la fin de la guerre, « Femmes à Boches » est le premier ouvrage à se pencher sur l’histoire de ces femmes.
