Students of Journalism & Media Studies at Central Women’s University participated in an interactive session, “Documenting Life: A Conversation with Elizabeth D. Costa.”

The session included a screening of the short documentary “35th July: Bangladesh's Deadly Protest” produced by Al Jazeera, followed by an insightful discussion where Elizabeth D. Costa shared her approach to observational documentary filmmaking and reflected on the ethical responsibilities involved in telling real-life stories.

This collaborative initiative between Central Women’s University and Drik Trust was organised by the Department of Journalism and Media Studies, CWU. Saydia Gulrukh (Journalist at New Age and Director of Drik Picture Library) and Samia Rahaman Preema (Researcher at Drik) were also present at the session.

The event was coordinated by Kazi Nafia Rahman and facilitated by Asrafun Naher, Lecturers at the Department of Journalism and Media Studies, CWU.

Students of Journalism & Media Studies at Central Women’s University took part in an inspiring workshop, “Literary Journalism: A Conversation with Poet Rummana Jannat.”
The workshop was a collaborative initiative between Central Women’s University and Drik Trust, organised by the Department of Journalism and Media Studies, CWU. They explored the art of narrative storytelling beyond traditional reporting and discovered new creative dimensions of journalism. The session also included a hands-on experience with cyanotype using text, blending literature with visual expression in the most captivating way.
The programme was led by Saydia Gulrukh (Journalist at New Age and Director of Drik Picture Library) and Samia Rahaman Preema (Researcher at Drik).

Exploring the Art of Cyanotype: Seeing Beyond the Surface

Students of Journalism and Media Studies at Central Women’s University delved into 'Beyond First Impressions: Revealing the Layers with Cyanotype', an interactive masterclass led by UK-based photographer and educator Simone Rudolphi. The session offered a hands-on exploration of creating photographs without a camera, using sunlight and light-sensitive chemicals to capture images on paper. Students had the opportunity to produce their own unique cyanotype works, discovering the creative possibilities of this alternative photographic process.

The workshop was a joint initiative of Central Women’s University and Drik Trust, organised by the Department of Journalism and Media Studies, CWU. Saydia Gulrukh (Journalist, New Age; Director, Drik Picture Library) and Samia Rahaman Preema (Researcher, Drik) were also present during the programme. The Department of Journalism and Media Studies, Central Women’s University hosted a thought-provoking session titled “Music, Market and Freedom: A Conversation with Shayan,” marking the first session of the Slow Journalism programme.

The session created an open and engaging space where students actively shared their thoughts, questions, and experiences. They expressed their views with confidence, making the discussion both lively and meaningful.

The conversation explored the complex relationship between music, market forces, and freedom of expression, offering students new perspectives on creativity, resistance, and reality.
We sincerely thank singer and activist Farzana Wahid Shayan for this enriching exchange, and Drik Trust for their collaboration in making the session possible.

Today, the students of the Department of Journalism and Media Studies, Central Women’s University, visited Chobi Mela as part of an educational exposure trip, with the support and cooperation of Drik.

During the visit, the students explored Alliance Francaise, Drik Gallery, and Shilpakala Academy, engaging with powerful visual narratives, documentary, photography and contemporary artistic expressions that reflect social realities.

The visit was enriched by the presence of Rehenuma Ahmed, a writer, anthropologist, and Director of Drik; Saidia Gulrukh, a researcher, journalist, and Director of Drik; and Samia Rahman Prima, a researcher at Drik.

Faculty members of the Department of Journalism and Media Studies, Kazi Nafia Rahman and Asrafun Naher, guided the students throughout the visit.

This exposure visit offered students a meaningful opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world practices in journalism and visual storytelling, encouraging critical observation and creative engagement.

The Department of Journalism and Media Studies at Central Women’s University has officially launched the program “Slow Journalism: Research and Storytelling in Nonfiction Writing” for its students, in collaboration with Drik Trust.

Moving beyond the traditional 5W1H, this program will equip students with the skills to explore stories in depth through rigorous research and thoughtful storytelling.

The program began with an orientation session conducted by renowned Bangladeshi photojournalist and activist Shahidul Alam, introducing students to the principles of research-based and reflective journalism.

The program is coordinated by Kazi Nafia Rahman, Lecturer at the Department of Journalism and Media Studies and Faculty Coordinator of the initiative.

The session was anchored by Asrafun Naher, Lecturer at the department and workshop facilitator.
