đ Earthquake Alert â Bangladesh, Today
đ Time: Around 1 hour ago
A magnitude ~5.7 earthquake struck near Narsingdi, very close to Dhaka, at a shallow depth â many people felt strong tremors in Dhaka and surrounding areas.

đ Why Did This Happen? (What Caused It)
Tectonic Plate Collision
Bangladesh lies at the intersection of three major tectonic plates: the Indian Plate, the Eurasian Plate, and the Burmese plate/microplate.
USM Journal
The Indian Plate is pushing north (several cm/year), colliding under the Eurasian Plate and Burmese plate â this builds up stress in the crust.

âĸ Active Fault Lines There are several important faults in and around Bangladesh, including:
âĸ Soft Soil AmplificationMuch of Bangladesh (especially around Dhaka) is built on very soft, alluvial sediments (e.g., floodplain deposits, clay), which can amplify shaking during an earthquake.

Much of Bangladesh (especially around Dhaka) is built on very soft, alluvial sediments (e.g., floodplain deposits, clay), which can amplify shaking during an earthquake.

This soil type also raises the risk of liquefaction (where the soil temporarily loses strength during strong shaking).

Rapid, Unplanned Urban Growth
Cities like Dhaka are growing very quickly, with many buildings not built to earthquake-resistant standards.

This makes the impact of even moderate earthquakes potentially more dangerous.

Stress Buildup Over Time
Frequent small quakes may be a sign that tectonic stress is accumulating in the region.
Daily Observer
Scientists worry that if this continues, larger earthquakes could occur in the future.

What You Can Do Right Now
If you felt the shaking, stay calm â drop, cover, and hold on until the shaking stops.
Afterward, check your surroundings: look for cracks, damage, or other signs of structural stress.
Share this post with friends and family â awareness is our first line of defense.
Consider earthquake readiness: know safe spots in your home, prepare a small emergency kit, and make a basic plan with your household.
