Student visa Q&A
The German Ambassador answers to frequently asked questions regarding student visa applications at the German Embassy:
1. Why is there a waiting time for an appointment in the Embassy for a student visa?
The demand for student visa largely exceeds the capacities of the Embassy for swiftly handling all the applications. The number of applications even shows an upward trend, so the waiting time had to be expanded accordingly. The Covid-19 pandemic has further compounded this.
2. How long is the waiting time for an appointment in the Embassy for a student visa?
Already since the beginning of 2020, the waiting time for a student visa appointment in the Embassy was more than one year. This information was automatically given to everybody before completing his or her online application. All applicants were equally informed that reducing the waiting time because of examinations or enrolment deadlines is not possible.
3. Is there a solution for swiftly reducing the waiting list for student visa?
Unfortunately no – in contrast to all well-meant but unrealistic recommendations on how to re-organize the work of the visa section.
The visa section is accepting and processing as many visa applications as possible. Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the health and safety of our clients and our colleagues remains our priority. Social distance and hygiene measures have to be followed at all time. Accepting more documents would not result in speeding up the decision process. Processing visa applications is also a question of personnel capacities, not only of counters. Given the huge and ever growing number of applications, any short-lived ad hoc measures are inappropriate for reducing the waiting time and only postpone and aggravate it in the future, as shown by past experience.
4. Is there a “new team” to concentrate on student visa applications?
No. The German Embassy has welcomed two new colleagues from Germany, who have replaced our colleagues departing Bangladesh. Unfortunately, they have not come additionally and the Embassy’s capacity to deal with student visa has not been enlarged by them. All colleagues are working hard, highly committed and under stressful conditions – like in the past. They all equally suffer from this unsatisfactory situation, but do their best.
5. Couldn’t the visa section exclusively concentrate on student visa in this situation?
Because of binding legal obligations the visa section cannot solely deal with student visa applications. Apart from these, there are a lot of other urgent and very well legitimized visa requests that are at the core of Bangladesh-Germany relations, e.g. family reunion applications. As a consequence, student visa must not be given a general priority over all other kinds of visa.
6. Can the Embassy make sure that no deadline for physical presence in German Universities will be missed by the students?
The Embassy informed all applicants already during the registration process on its website that examination and enrolment dates cannot be considered.
