IELTS Writing Task 2/ IELTS Essay:
You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.
Present a written argument or a case to an educated reader with no specialised knowledge of the following topic:
Some people prefer to eat at restaurants while others prefer to prepare and eat at home. Which one do you prefer?
Give reasons for your answer.

Model Answer 1:
Food is a vital need for our living and people from different geographic locations are habituated to eat foods differently and the menu differs so greatly. Many people are happy to eat food outside the home and they think that preparing foods is a waste of time but to others outside food is like a toxin and they always avoid outside foods and prepare foods at home. In my opinion, both ways of taking foods have some advantages and disadvantages.

If someone takes foods from a restaurant or fast food shop, he can save a great deal of time as food preparing is a cumbersome and time-consuming process. For those people there is no monotony of flaming the burner, washing the dishes, preparing the ingredients. They simply order the dishes and everything is ready for them. Moreover, restaurants offer a sound environment with a variety of menus. They don't have to maintain a time schedule to eat and mostly they spend time at a restaurant while they are not busy. Thus they can do lots of work without thinking the cooking issue. Cooking involved going to the grocery and buying vegetable, spices, rice, meat or fishes and it is really a difficult thing to do if someone is very busy with work. Restaurants offer an overwhelming environment to attract the people. They offer music, calm environment and better services.

But eating in a restaurant is not always pleasant. It costs a great deal of money. Almost all of the dishes cost at least 3-4 times higher than those of home-made foods. Foods cooked in restaurants are not hygienic always and as the restaurant owners want more profit, they don't hesitate to cook low-cost vapid foods. Almost all the items prepared at home are cooked with great care and as it's a matter of our health issue, we choose the fresh and best ingredients while shopping. On the other hand restaurant owners always buy low-quality ingredients. This causes some serious health issues. Those who eat at restaurants are more likely to suffer from different diseases.

Again, home-made foods are easy to digest and can be taken any time staying at home without thinking ' what the overall bill are going to be'. Foods prepared at home can save a lot of money and considering the nutrition facts I prefer to prepare and eat foods at home.

MOCK TEST: 1
IELTS Speaking Part 1: Sample Answers and Analysis
1. Do you read a daily newspaper?
I don’t, I’m afraid. Like a lot of people, I get my news from the internet. It’s so much faster.
2. What kind of books do you like to read?
Oh, all kinds really. I’ve got about a hundred books at home, actually: fiction, non-fiction, and lots of books about art.
3. How often do you use a library?
Well, I’m a student so I’m in the library almost everyday. I don’t always use it to find books, though. I’m more likely to use the computer facilities to look for information online.
4. How many hours a week do you spend reading?
These days I only spend one or two hours reading a book, to be honest. But when I was younger I used to spend almost all my free time reading.
5. Is there anything you find hard to read?
Yes there is, actually. I’m studying to become an accountant and the textbooks are really difficult. I have to read them if I want to pass my exams, though.
6. What kind of books did you read as a child?
When I was in primary school I used to really like adventure stories. Huckleberry Finn was probably my favourite book. I think I read it more than five times!
7. What’s the last thing you read and enjoyed?
This might sound a bit strange but I got my mobile phone bill yesterday and it was much lower than I expected. That was a nice surprise!
8. Have you ever kept a diary?
I have, actually. Last year I tried to write one but it only lasted about two weeks. When I have more time, I’d like to try again.
9. What’s the most popular newspaper in your country?
I’m not sure, to be honest, but the Times of India seems to be sold everywhere so it must be that.
10. Would you ever write your own autobiography?
I don’t think I would, no. My life just isn’t interesting enough to write a book about, I’m afraid.

Describe a shop that recently opened in your city/country.
You should say:
• what its name is
• where it is
• who the typical customers are
and say if you have bought anything from the shop. Why/Why not?
Sample Answer:
I would like to thank you for this nice cue card topic. A store for babies named “The Baby Shop” has been opened in my locality. The shop is specialized for babies and sells products for children only. The shop provides the best necessaries for the children including the newborn babies. This is a great cue card to answer and I am feeling lucky with this.

The shop is located in the centre of my town and initially has only a single branch in my country, Indonesia. Being located in the centre of the town, the shop is accessible from every corner and remains open round the day. This is a great shop for the babies and provides a wide range of necessary stuff for the people. Interestingly, it sells almost all types of products for babies ranging from zero to five years old.

New parents are the typical customers for this shop. Besides, the other parents who have babies under five-years-old at their home are also the visitors to this shop. They frequently visit the shop and get their necessaries. The options are broad and thus there are plenty of chances to get the right product for their babies. Moreover, people who need any baby products and cannot find them in other places also visit this shop. This is of a great importance to them.

Recently, I had to visit the shop for getting a baby product. In fact, one of my cousins has become a new mother and I went to see the baby. Before visiting the baby, I was planning to what I can take as a gift for the baby. Suddenly, I realized that baby shop is the best place to find the right thing for the newborn. I visited the shop and got some clothes for this newly born angel.

Smoking not only harms the smoker, but also those who are nearby. Therefore, smoking should be banned in public places.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Model Answer

Medical studies have shown that smoking not only leads to health problems for the smoker, but also for people close by. As a result of this, many believe that smoking should not be allowed in public places. Although there are arguments on both sides, I strongly agree that a ban is the most appropriate course of action.

Opponents of such a ban argue against it for several reasons. Firstly, they say that passive smokers make the choice to breathe in other people’s smoke by going to places where it is allowed. If they would prefer not to smoke passively, then they do not need to visit places where smoking is permitted. In addition, they believe a ban would possibly drive many bars and pubs out of business as smokers would not go there anymore. They also argue it is a matter of freedom of choice. Smoking is not against the law, so individuals should have the freedom to smoke where they wish.

However, there are more convincing arguments in favour of a ban. First and foremost, it has been proven that to***co consists of carcinogenic compounds which cause serious harm to a person’s health, not only the smoker. Anyone around them can develop cancers of the lungs, mouth and throat, and other sites in the body. It is simply not fair to impose this upon another person. It is also the case that people’s health is more important than businesses. In any case, pubs and restaurants could adapt to a ban by, for example, allowing smoking areas

In conclusion, it is clear that it should be made illegal to smoke in public places. This would improve the health of thousands of people, and that is most definitely a positive development.

WRITING-2

Some people believe the aim of university education is to help graduates get better jobs. Others believe there are much wider benefits of university education for both individuals and society.

Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Model Answer

These days, more and more people are making the choice to go to university. While some people are of the opinion that the only purpose of a university education is to improve job prospects, others think that society and the individual benefit in much broader ways.

It is certainly true that one of the main aims of university is to secure a better job. The majority of people want to improve their future career prospects and attending university is one of the best ways to do this as it increases a person's marketable skills and attractiveness to potential employers. In addition, further education is very expensive for many people, so most would not consider it if it would not provide them with a more secure future and a higher standard of living. Thus job prospects are very important.

However, there are other benefits for individuals and society. Firstly, the independence of living away from home is a benefit because it helps the students develop better social skills and improve as a person. A case in point is that many students will have to leave their families, live in halls of residence and meet new friends. As a result, their maturity and confidence will grow enabling them to live more fulfilling lives. Secondly, society will gain from the contribution that the graduates can make to the economy. We are living in a very competitive world, so countries need educated people in order to compete and prosper.

Therefore, I believe that although a main aim of university education is to get the best job, there are clearly further benefits. If we continue to promote and encourage university attendance, it will lead to a better future for individuals and society.

Government investment in the arts, such as music and theatre, is a waste of money. Governments must invest this money in public services instead.

To what extent do you agree with this statement?

Model Answer

These days, the government spends a large part of its budget not only on public services, but also the arts. Although I agree that it is important to spend money on public services, I do not think spending on the arts is a waste of money.

There are several reasons for spending a significant amount of the government budget on public services. First and foremost, public services are the things such as hospitals, roads and schools, and these things determine the quality of life that most of us will have. For example, if the government does not spend enough money on hospitals, the health of our society may decline. Similarly, if not enough money is spent on schools, our children may not be properly educated. Also, it will be the poor in our society that will be affected more if we do not spend enough on these things because they are the ones more dependent on such services.

However, this does not mean that the arts should be completely neglected. To begin, it is difficult for many arts institutions to generate much profit, so without some help from the government, many theatres and other such places may have to close. Moreover, the arts also have an important impact on our quality of life. Many people get great pleasure in going to see music and theatre performances so it is important that the government assists such institutions so that they can continue to provide entertainment to the public.

To sum up, there are clear benefits of ensuring a large amount of investment goes into public services as this influences the quality of life for nearly all of us. That said, I do not believe spending money on the arts is a waste of money as this too provides important benefits.

Some people think that they should spend money they earn now enjoying life, while others think that the money should be put into savings for future. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

People have different opinions on how they should spend their money. While some people believe that we should spend our money to enjoy life, others argue that we should save it for future. I agree with the latter point of view.

There are people who believe that life is supposed to be enjoyable and full of happiness. In their opinion, if you just work hard to save more money for your future, you will not be able to enjoy your life. No one, after all, gets a second life to enjoy the goodies they give up in their quest to save more and more. This argument certainly sounds convincing; however, there is another side to it.

I have absolutely no issues with people who believe that life should be enjoyed to the fullest. But in order to enjoy life, we also need to be prepared to handle its ups and downs. It is almost impossible to predict what will happen in the future. For example, a critical illness, an accident or a loss of job can land us in serious trouble and derail the course of our life. If we spend all our money to enjoy our current life, we will not be able to deal with these situations.

To conclude, life is full of surprises and it is impossible to predict what will happen tomorrow. Therefore, we need to be prepared and the most practical way of doing this is to save money for the future. This does not mean that we should not spend money at all. What we need to do is to strike a balance between our need for enjoyment and the need to secure our future.
