On this day in 1776, George Washington secured the first major military victory of his career. After an 11-month siege, the British evacuated Boston, Massachusetts giving the city back to Americans. This victory not only secured Washington as the undisputed leader of the Continental Army but was the inspiration for America to declare full independence only a few months later.
