Every February, these trees explode into red. And most people have never heard of this place. πΊ
No leaves. No green. Just red.
Every February β before a single leaf has grown back after winter β thousands of Shimul trees along the banks of the Jadukata River burst into the most vivid scarlet red you have ever seen.
Shimul Bagan. The largest cotton flower garden in all of Asia. Sitting quietly in Sunamganj in the Sylhet division β just a few hours from the city but feeling like another world entirely.
For a few extraordinary weeks every year β the entire riverbank blazes red against a blue winter sky. People travel from across Bangladesh to see it. Photographers come from around the world. And then β as quietly as it began β the flowers fall. The leaves come back. And Shimul Bagan goes back to sleep for another year.
The people who live in the villages around this extraordinary garden speak Syloti. The boatmen who take visitors along the Jadukata River speak Syloti. This is their home. And their language.
Part 2 coming soon β where we take you deeper into the story of Shimul Bagan. πΊ
