There are approximately 300 million alveoli in each lung.
Alveoli are the structural and functional unit of the lungs.
Their total surface area is 40-80 m2.
Each alveolus contain following cells:
1. Alveolar type I pneumocytes
2. Alveolar type II pneumocytes that produces surfactant
3. Alveolar macrophages i.e. dust cells
4. APUD cells (amine precursor and uptake decarboxylation)
5. Mast cells, plasma cells and lymphocytes
