IELTS Writing Task 1 Tips and Vocabulary:
Task Overview
In Writing Task 1, you'll describe visual information (graphs, charts, tables, maps, or processes) in at least 150 words. Focus on summarizing key trends, comparisons, or processes, not every detail.
Tips for Writing Task 1
1. Understand the Question:
Identify the type of data (e.g., trend, comparison, process).
Highlight key features before starting.
2. Structure Your Answer:
Introduction: Paraphrase the question statement.
Example: "The graph illustrates the number of visitors to three different museums over a decade."
Overview: Summarize the main trends or features. Avoid specific data.
Example: "Overall, the number of visitors to Museum A increased significantly, while Museum B experienced a decline."
Body Paragraphs: Divide the description logically (e.g., group similar data or compare trends).
3. Use Accurate Data:
Include numbers, percentages, and time frames when needed.
4. Avoid Opinions:
Writing Task 1 is objective; describe what you see, not what you think.
5. Use Linking Words:
Connect ideas smoothly (e.g., "In contrast," "Similarly," "Meanwhile," etc.).
6. Focus on Grammar and Vocabulary:
Use a variety of sentence structures and accurate verb tenses.
Vocabulary for Task 1
1. Vocabulary for Trends
Increase:
Rise, Grow, Climb, Surge, Escalate
Example: The population rose significantly between 1990 and 2000.
Decrease:
Decline, Drop, Fall, Plummet, Dip
Example: Unemployment rates fell sharply after 2015.
Stability:
Remain steady, Stay constant, Maintain the same level
Example: The percentage of renewable energy usage remained constant throughout the decade.
Fluctuation:
Fluctuate, Oscillate, Vary, Witness dramatic changes
Example: The temperature fluctuated considerably over the period.
2. Vocabulary for Comparisons
Higher than, Lower than, Similar to, In contrast to
Example: Exports were higher in 2010 compared to 2005.

Example: The highest proportion of income was spent on housing.
3. Vocabulary for Percentages and Proportions
Small Amounts: A small fraction, A minority, Less than a quarter
Large Amounts: A significant majority, Over half, Nearly two-thirds
Example: A significant majority of people preferred online shopping.
4. Vocabulary for Time and Trends
Time Periods:
In the first half, During the latter part, Over the next decade
Rate of Change:
Gradually, Steadily, Rapidly, Sharply
Example: Sales increased gradually over five years.
5. Vocabulary for Processes (Flowcharts/Diagrams)
Sequence Words:
First, Next, Subsequently, Finally
Example: First, the raw materials are collected. Next, they are processed into goods.
Passive Voice:
Is/are + past participle
Example: The mixture is heated and then cooled.
Common Sentence Structures
1. Describing Trends:
The number of students increased steadily over the period.
There was a sharp decline in sales after 2018.
2. Making Comparisons:
In 2020, profits were higher than in 2010.
The proportion of women in the workforce was similar to that of men.
3. Describing Stability/Fluctuations:
The data remained unchanged throughout the year.
The graph shows that prices fluctuated considerably between 2015 and 2020.

Sample Overview for a Graph
"The line graph illustrates the changes in three types of energy consumption between 2000 and 2020. Overall, solar energy usage experienced a significant increase, while fossil fuel consumption declined. Meanwhile, the use of nuclear energy remained relatively stable.
