পৃথিবীর অক্সিজেনের প্রধান উৎস আসলে গাছপালা নয়, মহাসাগর।

বন-জঙ্গলকে আমরা বেশিরভাগ সময় বলি "পৃথিবীর ফুসফুস"। কিন্তু বাস্তবে তারা মোট অক্সিজেনের মাত্র ২৮% উৎপাদন করে।

আসল নায়ক হলো ফাইটোপ্ল্যাংকটন—সমুদ্রের উপরিভাগে ভাসমান অতি ক্ষুদ্র জীব। এরা গাছের মতোই সূর্যালোক ব্যবহার করে সালোকসংশ্লেষণের মাধ্যমে অক্সিজেন তৈরি করে। এই ক্ষুদ্র প্রাণীরাই পৃথিবীর মোট অক্সিজেনের অন্তত ৫০% উৎপাদন করে।

মজার ব্যাপার কী—আমরা যে অক্সিজেন শ্বাসের সাথে নিই তার বেশিরভাগই বায়ুমণ্ডলে জমা হয়েছে কোটি কোটি বছর ধরে। এই সঞ্চয়ে অবদান রেখেছে উভয়ে—জমিনের গাছপালা আর দরিয়ার প্রাণীকূল।

এরপর থেকে বুকভরে শ্বাস নেবার সময় মনে রাখবেন: শুধু গাছপালা নয়, পৃথিবীর বেশিরভাগ জায়গা জুড়ে থাকা নীল মহাসাগরই আসলে আমাদের প্রাণবায়ুর প্রধান উৎস।
