why do you explain yourself?

Don't explain yourself because the person who likes you don't need that. It is universally acknowledged that the person who hate you don't believe that. Sometimes we often show something about ourselves to someone, whether it's just to tell them or just to prove it. Try to imagine that when you explain something to someone who likes you, they don't need it, because they themselves know your true nature and character. .Meanwhile, people who hate you will not believe the words that come out of your mouth at all, because basically they already have negative thoughts about you.
