There is no substitute for building a strong banking system to accelerate the economic development of a country and make it sustainable. Therefore, it is very important for the development of the banking sector, to keep the banking sector strong. The banking sector is playing a leading role in the economic and social development of the country.
If for any reason the loan money or installment is not repaid after the stipulated time as per the terms of the contract, the loan is considered as defaulted loan.

There are many reasons behind defaulted loans. Such as:

1. Lending without adequate screening and proper process;
2. Approval of loans by exerting political influence in government banks and influence of directors in private banks.
3. Lack of monitoring.
4. Tendency to make extra profit.
5. To provide special benefits to the borrowers through full formation.
6. Lack of skilled manpower.
7. Lack of good governance.

According to Bangladesh Bank sources, 25% of loans disbursed by public sector banks and 10% of loans disbursed by private banks are in default. In December last year, the defaulted debt was 94,331 crore taka or 9.32 percent. The news of some relief is that the defaulted debt has decreased by about Tk 1,800 crore in three months. But banks say this is not the true picture of defaulted loans.Because, no one is being identified as a defaulter now because of Corona.At the end of September of the outgoing year, 12 banks had a capital deficit of Tk 17,660 crore.According to the IMF, the total amount of non-performing loans in the banking sector as of June 2018 stood at 2,40,000 crore taka, which is really worrying.

When a large portion of the loan goes into default, it has a negative impact on the overall banking sector.

The negative impacts are:
1. Banks run out of capital. As a result, customers and officials are deprived of fair benefits.
2. It becomes difficult to sell mortgaged assets as opposed to loans.
3. Profiting decreases as a result of provisioning.
4. The borrower's loan quickly becomes a classified loan.

One of the challenges of the country's banking sector in the coming days is to reduce the amount of default loans.such as:

1. To change the law first;
2. To make the money loan court effective and effective in recovering defaulted loans.
3. To try to recover the loan disbursed through agreement with the defaulter.
4. Proper monitoring before disbursement of loan. 5. Giving up the tendency to make extra profit.
6. To recruit skilled manpower.
7.To follow the instructions of Bangladesh Bank properly.

The state has to boycott the debt defaulters. Debtors who are victims of the situation need to be saved with incentives and financial and management support. A social environment needs to be created so that borrowers are forced to repay the money. If the bank does not take effective steps, the defaulted loans in the banking sector will not decrease. At the same time, the confidence of the people will not increase. The wheel of economy will not move. Therefore, good governance is needed in the banking sector to take the overall economy of the country forward.
