The language of art π¨π©βπ¨π¨βπ¨
"Through encounters with a wide range of media and materials, children explore the sensuousness and beauty of color, texture, movement, lines and space. They learn to look carefully and discern nuances, to move with thoughtful intention, and to follow their intuition. As children become more comfortable and skillful with these media, they are able to use them to communicate their understanding, emotions, and questions. Their fluency in a range of art βlanguagesβ in turn, opens new possibilities for collaboration and dialogue, for taking new perspectives and for deepening their relationships with each other.β β Ann Pelo, The Language of Art
By giving the children a variety of materials to create their own artwork, we enabled them to connect with their feelings, emotions, and imagination. This also helped open lines of communication between staff and children.
Creating this piece of artwork for Children in Need allowed us to offer the children real choiceβwhether they wanted to use paint, crayons, pencils, or collage materials. They chose the medium they preferred. They also selected the background shape they wanted to work with, whether it was a circle, square, or rectangle. Every aspect was their decision, their voice, and their expression, resulting in their own unique masterpiece.

Remembrance Day 2025
Remembrance Day, also known as Poppy Day, is observed in Commonwealth countries to honour the brave men and women of the armed forces who lost their lives in service. This year, the children had the opportunity to explore the meaning of this important day in creative and memorable ways.
We began by making our own poppies and designing flags to wave, allowing the children to express their understanding through art and movement. The highlight of our day was visiting the local cenotaph, where the children proudly laid the wreaths they had made during the session. It was a meaningful moment, helping them connect with history and the wider community in a tangible way.
Afterwards, the community centre kindly offered the children some fruit, and everyone enjoyed a little dance together, celebrating friendship and togetherness. The day was not only memorable for the children but also for staff, who valued the chance to open up this meaningful experience and help the children engage with their community.
We also visited Swffryd Primary to take part in their assembly in celebration of Remembrance Day.
During the assembly, a veteran spoke about his time in the war, giving the children a meaningful insight into the experiences of those who served. We then observed a minuteβs silence in respect for the armed forces members who lost their lives in service.
All the children took part in the minuteβs silence, and we are incredibly proud of their respect and participation.
