The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is a famous poem written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. It tells the story of a sailor who kills an albatross, a lucky sea bird, and brings a terrible curse upon himself and his crew. They suffer without water even though the sea surrounds them — “Water, water, everywhere, nor any drop to drink.” Through this punishment, the mariner learns that every creature is important and that harming nature brings suffering. In the end, he is forgiven after he realizes the value of love and respect for all living things. The poem teaches us a great moral — to live in harmony with nature.
