At present days, science has advanced so much that people are producing artificial meat in the lab. Artificial meat or lab-grown meat or also known as cultured meat is meat produced by culturing animal cells in vitro using tissue engineering techniques. Artificial meat is a miracle of modern science. Scientists can harvest a small sample of cells from a living animal and cultivate the sample to grow outside of the animal’s body and shape this sample into a fully formed piece of meat. Fish fillets, hamburgers, and bacon all are indistinguishable and have the same taste consumers know and love.
Brief History of Artificial meat:
The idea first came in 1950 during second world war. A Dutch researcher named Willem Van Elen who was a prisoner at that time suffered greatly from starvation which made him passionate about food production and food security. Later on, many research and experiments had done in-vitro for the purpose of producing cultured meat. The first public trial was done in London on 5th August 2013 using the first cultured beef burger patty which was created by Mark Post at Maastricht University. It was tested on live television. After that many startups were launched around the world to industrially develop the concept of cultured meat.
What is the purpose behind artificial meat?
To meet the need of meat consumption, 70 billion land animals, and possibly trillions of marine animals, are killed each year. A vast majority of these animals are raised in factory farms, where they are brutally abused in severely overcrowded and putrid conditions for their entire lives. To stop this inhuman act towards animals and to reduce environment pollution from livestock waste, it is surely a great advancement of science.
It has got a great attention because it involves stem cells. See the process of making artificial meat: https://www.awesomebiochem.com/2023/01/05/what-is-cultured-meat/
Issues:
There is an ethical issue regarding the using of fetal bovine serum (FBS) as the culture medium. Because FBS is made from the blood of unborn calves of pregnant cows after they are killed. However, companies are trying to find alternatives of FBS.
A question may arise that if the cells are taken from dead animals how will we general people know?

The significance of BMB of Disease in our practical life is enormous. It is not a subject only for the Biochemist, rather it is a subject for all general people. BMB of Disease teaches us how to lead a disciplined diet and a healthy life as well as how to treat and diagnose diseases in our practical life. The best part is, a normal individual will not know behind the scene of a disease or medication but someone who reads BMB of Disease will take medications by knowing why and what it will do to his/her body.

Cardiac muscle under microscope:

Cardiac muscle is a special type of involuntary muscle present in the wall of the heart. These cells are also known as myocardium in vertebrates. These muscles cannot move or contract at will. But structurally they are striated and branched like voluntary muscles.
Cardiac muscle is found only in the heart. The contractions and expansions occur continuously in a certain rhythm from birth to death of the animal. Cardiac cells are cylindrical, branched and relatively short. They are 0.8 mm in length and 12-18 mm in diameter.
The contraction capacity of these muscles is relatively fast and never fatigues.

👉Effects of Exercise on Body Systems:
👉Exercise is any physical or bodily activity that enhances or maintains physical fitness and overall health and wellness. Exercise is performed for various reasons. Some people perform exercise to improve strength and growth. Some do exercise to develop muscles and cardiovascular system. Some people perform exercise to gain athletic skills, whereas some people do exercise because of the advice of their doctor or physician to maintain normal health. Many people do exercise to lose excessive body weight. And there are people who perform exercise simply for enjoyment. There are also many people who choose to exercise outdoors where they can congregate in groups, socialize and improve well-being as well as mental health.

What is Bt Corn?
Bt corn is a genetically modified organism (GMO) that is created by inserting a bacterial gene called Cry1Ab from Bacillus thuringenesis into the DNA of the desired plant. This enables the corn to produce a protein called Bt-Delta Endotoxin. It is very effective for restricting the growth of Lepidoptera larva, caterpillar during the larva stage. Bt-delta endotoxin is a deadly toxin for insects but harmless for humans, mammals, birds, fish and environment....

The researches in the field of biochemistry progresses in parallel with the development of better tools and techniques. Therefore, the authors have highlighted some of these important developments. Such as DNA Based Information Technologies has been significantly revised to add the latest advances in genomics and next-generation sequencing. Finally, they have devoted considerable attention in making the text and the art more useful to students learning biochemistry for the first time. Those who are familiar with the book, will obviously notice the changes as soon as they crack the cover.
