An academic visit to the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Civil Lines, New Delhi was organised by the Department of Zoology, Deshbandhu College, University of Delhi, for students of B.Sc. Hons Zoology GE Sem IV and B.Sc. (Prog) Life Science Sem II on 15th April, 2026. This visit was co-ordinated by the esteemed Principal, Prof. Rajendra Kumar Pandey, Dr Irengbam Rocky, and Dr Sushma Sharma. The purpose of the visit was to gain practical exposure to the functioning of a National-level institute involved in disease surveillance, prevention and control. It provided an opportunity to understand how theoretical knowledge of biology and public health is applied in real-world scenarios. During our time at NCDC, we were guided through various divisions and sessions by experienced professionals, including Dr Raghavendra, Dr Himanshu Chauhan, Dr Naveen Gupta, and Dr Shaukat Kamal, who introduced us to different aspects of public health, epidemiology, laboratory practices, and vector management. We attended a series of informative sessions conducted by experienced professionals from different divisions. Each session provided valuable insights into NCDC's operations and various aspects of public health. Introduction to NCDC & Epidemiology Division was conducted by Dr Raghavendra, Additional Director of the Centre. He gave us an overview of the NCDC, its objectives and highlighted the importance of epidemiology in disease surveillance and control. The next session was taken by Dr Himanshu Chauhan, who explained the Integrated Disease Surveillance Program and its role in monitoring and managing disease outbreaks across the country. Dr Naveen Gupta focused on the One Health approach, emphasising the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. Dr Shaukat Kamal explained vector identification and control strategies and guided us through the Entomology Museum, which provided a visual learning experience on the identification of various mosquitoes, other arthropods, rodents, and other animals. The National Centre for Disease Control has 1,08,757 specimens in its Epidemiology museum, out of which 89,464 are mosquito specimens belonging to 31 genera and 539 species around India and the world. It has many other insects, arachnids and vectors such as rodents, parrots, etc. We observed live cultures of Culex, Aedes and Anopheles mosquitoes, which are maintained for research work. All three stages of the mosquitoes: eggs, larvae (L1, L2, L3), pupae, and adult forms were cultured. Finally, the visit was concluded with a group photograph with Dr Arti Bahl, Additional Director of the centre. Overall, the visit was highly informative and engaging, giving valuable exposure to the students and provided the latest information on the insect vectors and diseases.
