It aims to provide quality education & conduct research on the fileds of Genetics, Bioinformatics & Molecular Plant Breeding. Background:
========
The Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding is one of the leading departments under Faculty of Agriculture of the Bangladesh Agricultural University, mymensingh, Bangladesh. Previously it was merged with Department of Crop Botany and jointly conducted
the course curriculum. It was established in 2nd January, 1974 and since then it has been functioning with lots of credentials. Renowned cytogeneticist Professor Md. Ashraful Haque was the founder and first head of the department. Courses:
=====
The department offers courses at undergraduate and post-graduate (M.S., Ph.D.) The courses of undergraduate level are: Cytology, Genetics and Cytogenetics, Plant Breeding, Special Plant Breeding, and Plant Biotechnology & Genetic Engineering. At MS level it offers 14 courses, 7 in each of semester-I and semester-II, followed by research (for thesis) in Semester-III. So far the department awarded MS degree to 415 students and PhD degree to 37 students. Faculty strength:
==========
The department has 9 Professors, 4 Associate Professors and 6 Assistant Professors. Many of them achieved international reputation for their scholarly works. Many also have the experience of teaching in well-known institutions of higher learning abroad. So far the department released 4 Soybean varieties; 2 Rapeseed & Mustard varieties, l Rice variety and 1 Lentil variety. Scope:
====
In order to produce efficient and qualified manpower in the field of Plant breeding and biotechnology, our effort is to educate our young generation, equip them with quality and market oriented know how for the country. It will open up the world of opportunity for them to contribution in this field all over the world that would cater the growing demand of time. Research Strength (Facility):
==================
The department has four well equipped and specialized laboratories and one Field Laboratory which extend research opportunities especially for M.S. students, teachers of the department and researchers of other departments/institutions. Field Laboratory:
The department has a field laboratory of 20 acres of land. Nearly about 1500 germplasms of almost all important crops of the country alongwith some hybrids and advance lines are preserved here. Different crop breeding programs, seed multiplication, various types of M.S. research work are performed here. Cytology & Cytogenetics lab:
Observing different stages of cell division, Studying Karyotype, etc. Tissue Culture lab:
Conducting tissue culture (Anther culture, embryo culture, etc.) of various crops, Protoplast fusion, Plant regeneration, etc. Biotechnology & Genetic Engineering lab:
Different experiments on Biotechnological research are conducted here. Molecular Genetics lab:
A lot of advance research works on molecular level are done here. Such as; DNA Extraction, DNA Confirmation, PCR, Agarose Gel Electroforesis, Gel Documentation, etc. Plant Molecular Breeding and Bioinformatics lab:
A lab with all necessary laboratory facilities for molecular breeding and bioinformatics works are being inaugurated in 2024. Postgraduate students can carry on their research work there. Plant Stress Breeding lab:
A lab with all necessary laboratory facilities for stress breeding are built recently. Growth Room:
Growing Plant in controlled condition (light, temperature, humidity, etc.)
