Ananda Mohan College, located in Mymensingh, Bangladesh, is one of the most prestigious educational institutions in the country. The institution was originally founded in 1883 by Ananda Mohan Bose at his family residence on Ram Babu Road. Initially named City Collegiate School, it evolved into a college on 18 July 1901, affiliated with the Calcutta City College, established by the Brahmo Samaj. Ho
wever, the college section temporarily closed in 1906 after the death of its founder. In 1908, with the initiative of Mr. Blackwood, the then district magistrate of Mymensingh, the college was revived and renamed Ananda Mohan College. Professor Baikuntha Kishor Chakravarty became its first principal, and the college remained affiliated with Calcutta University until 1947. Following the partition of India, it was affiliated with Dhaka University and was later nationalized in 1963. That year, it introduced honors courses in Bangla and History. In 1964, it became known as Government Ananda Mohan College and received significant funding for expansion, including new buildings and facilities. Today, Ananda Mohan College offers honors and master's programs in 17 subjects: Bangla, English, History, Islamic History & Culture, Islamic Studies, Economics, Political Science, Social Welfare, Sociology, Botany, Zoology, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Geography, Accounting, and Management. The college sits on a 15.28-acre campus, boasting facilities such as a library, auditorium, common rooms, students' hostels (including one for girls), a mosque, a botanical garden, and laboratories for science students. It provides transportation services for students and faculty and offers extracurricular activities through units of the Bangladesh National Cadet Core (BNCC) and Rover Scouts. Additionally, the college has a welfare trust to support underprivileged but talented students. Ananda Mohan College has produced numerous distinguished alumni, including Dr. Niharranjan Roy (historian), P.C. Sorcar (magician), Principal Ibrahim Khan (writer), Syed Waliullah (novelist), and Nirmalendu Goon (poet). Its legacy was celebrated during the centenary celebration in 2008, which marked 100 years since its establishment as a center for higher education. Ananda Mohan Bose, a prominent nationalist leader, founded City Collegiate School in 1883 in Mymensingh, which later evolved into Ananda Mohan College. Born on September 23, 1847, in the village of Joysiddhi in present-day Kishoreganj, Ananda Mohan Bose was an exceptional student. He completed his entrance examination (equivalent to SSC) from Mymensingh Zila School in 1862, securing the ninth position in the merit list. Bose then went on to complete his FA (HSC equivalent) and BA from Presidency College, Kolkata, securing first position in both. For his outstanding academic achievements, he received the prestigious Premchand Roy scholarship in 1870. Bose was later honored with the title of Wrangler by Cambridge University for his excellence in mathematics.
