Appropriate Mechanization in Bangladesh for Sustainable Smallholders’ Arable Crop Farming 30/04/2025

We are delighted to present the official documentary of our research project on “Appropriate Mechanization in Bangladesh for Sustainable Smallholders’ Arable Crop Farming: From Local Adoption to Scaling Up.”

The study is conducted by the HSATE - Hub for Smallholders' Agri-Tech Economics at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) commissioned by the International Growth Centre (IGC), directed through the London School of Economics and Political Science, University of Oxford and UK Aid.

This research examines the economics of appropriate mechanization and adoption potentials of labour saving technologies.

Led by Dr. Akm Abdullah Al-Amin, Associate Professor at BAU, the team engaged in a year-long journey that included:

Use of nationally representative secondary data, nonproprietary data, field-level engagement, focus group discussions and key informants interviews in the Rajshahi division.

Economic modelling using linear programming to assess the profitability of mechanization alternatives and enterprises choice.

Evaluation of different farm management scenarios using two-wheel and four-wheel machines.

The documentary highlights our research works and presents possible pathways for profitable farmer owned smallholder mechanization— to guide national policy.

Watch to explore the scenarios, the methods, and the journey!
