Violence doesn’t stop at the school gate — it follows learners online.
On 6 November, the world marks the International Day against Violence and Bullying at School, including Cyberbullying, under the theme “Screen smart: Learning to be safe in the digital era.”
Every month, 1 in 3 learners experiences bullying and at least 1 in 10 faces cyberbullying. Children who are bullied are twice as likely to feel lonely or have trouble sleeping. Some even have thoughts of su***de. Online abuse creates a 24/7 loop of fear that follows learners from screens into classrooms. The risks are even greater for some learners: 58 % of girls and young women have faced online harassment, and LGBTQI+ learners are about 50 % more likely to be cyberbullied than their peers.
Online violence is not just a digital safety issue, it strikes at the very heart of education, undermining learners' health, well-being and participation, threatening their future and that of societies.
Education must be our frontline defence. UNESCO works with governments, schools and teachers to foster safe learning environments free from violence, train educators to recognize and respond to online violence, and strengthen policies so that learning spaces — physical and digital — are safe and healthy for all. On a dark evening 130 years ago while performing an experiment on how cathode-ray tubes emit light, Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen was perplexed by a fluorescent screen in his laboratory that was glowing for no apparent reason.
He spent weeks eating and sleeping in his lab to identify the cause of this mysterious glow; a new form of energy. He called them X-rays, from the mathematical designation for something unknown, because no one understood what these remarkable rays actually were.
In a series of experiments, Röntgen discovered X-rays could travel distances of metres and pass through materials such as wood and aluminium unimpeded, but not denser materials such as lead and bone.
Röntgen’s first X-ray-photographs included a ghostly picture of his wife Anna Bertha’s hand, with bones and a ring on her third finger clearly visible, and commanded the attention of scientists and the public alike.
Doctors instantly realised this new photographic technique could help them look inside the human body without surgery, and were soon using X-rays to diagnose bone fractures, locate embedded bullets and identify causes of paralysis.
Röntgen refused to patent his findings, convinced that his “inventions and discoveries belong to the world at large.” His discovery earned him the very first Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901.

💫 A thousand years ago, Abu Rayhon Beruniy looked to the stars, pursuing knowledge to better understand our shared world.
He compiled the coordinates and sizes of 1,029 stars, calculated the Earth’s radius, and wrote across disciplines, from astronomy to history, from mathematics to philosophy.
A true polymath of the Middle Ages, Beruniy’s curiosity transcended borders, from Central Asia to India, and from science to the humanities.
This week, his legacy returns to Samarkand with a special edition of The UNESCO Courier, “Abu Rayhon Beruniy: A Multi-Faceted Scholar,” produced in partnership with the Culture and Development Foundation of Uzbekistan (Madaniyat va san’atni rivojlantirish jamg‘armasi), making its way to the .
A tribute to boundless curiosity, and to the enduring human drive to understand the world.
