I came across this sentence in a post by The Deltagram: "Retail therapy provides temporary relief from loneliness and emotional pain, but deepens the illusion of fulfilment."

I frowned as the wording left me feeling that this high-speed train had overshot the station's platform. Why was I disappointed?

The phrase "the illusion of fulfilment" seems to imply that "fulfillment" itself might be a problem, an illusion, when in fact, fulfillment from retail therapy is the problem.

Leaning back, I conjured several examples that essentially conveyed the same meaning with greater literary satisfaction and precision.

1. Retail therapy provides temporary relief from loneliness and emotional pain, but deepens illusory fulfilment.

2. The temporary relief from loneliness and emotional pain from retail therapy deepens illusory fulfilment.

3. The temporary relief from loneliness and emotional pain from retail therapy aggravates illusory fulfilment.

4. Retail therapy provides temporary relief from loneliness and emotional pain yet deepens illusory fulfilment.

My first attempt gave me #1. Simple, direct, impactful (IELTS writing band 7 or thereabouts). It fixes the source of dissonance by highlighting that the fulfillment gained by retail therapy is imaginary... But I wasn't satisfied, I needed to open the reader's third eye. So I leaned back a bit more and....my final sentence:

"The temporary relief from loneliness and emotional pain offered by retail therapy merely augments illusory fulfilment further compounding emotional despondency."

That sentence is the kind of writing that can turn heads and impact readers as they delve into its meaning, and it's actually unnecessary in most situations. For the majority of your needs, the ability to formulate unambiguously worded sentences is the requirement (which is what IELTS writing band 7 is about), and is what I teach in a package incorporating reading, writing and speaking English.

যারা ইংরেজি নতুন শিখতেছেন, সহজ বাক্য দিয়ে শুরু করেন। বাচ্চাদের বই পড়েন, বাক্য গঠনে শব্দ কেমনে সাজায় তা খেয়াল করেন। সাথে ভালো একটা ডিকশনারি রাখবেন, "ইংলিশ টু বাংলা" এমন কোনো আবর্জনা রাখবেন না। স্কুলে পড়াকালীন আমার আব্বু আমার বাংলা ডিকশনারি হিসেবে ছিলেন, ইংলিশ টু বাংলা অথবা বাংলা টু ইংলিশ ডিকশনারীতে এতো পরিমাণে ভুল থাকতো বিরক্ত হয়ে সেগুলো থেকে এড়িয়ে চলতাম।
এরকম করে এক দুই মাসের পর দেখবেন যে রিডিং আর রাইটিং দোনোটাতে উন্নতির আশা করতে পারেন।

I often discourage learning English by "speaking".

তার কারন হলো যে কেউ যখন ইংরেজি কথোপকথনমূলক ভাষা হিসেবে শিখে, ভাষার পরিসর স্বয়ংক্রিয়ভাবে সীমিত হয়ে যায়। অনেকেই অভিযোগ করেন যে জটিল বাক্য (complex sentence) কেমনে লিখে। জটিল বাক্যের কোন নির্দিষ্ট সংজ্ঞা আমি কোনদিন চিন্তা করি নাই, পরবর্তীতে ইংরেজি পড়াতে গিয়ে খোঁজ করে বারবার যৌক্তিক যৌগিক বাক্য দেখে মেজাজ গরম করে নিজে থেকে একটা তৈরি করে নেই।
বাক্যের ভিন্ন অংশের (clauses) যৌক্তিক সংযোগ ছাড়াও সেই অংশগুলো একটা আরেকটার মধ্যে তথ্যের স্তর হিসেবে উপস্থিত থাকতে পারে। এইরকম বাক্যে দুটো ভাগ (clauses) না, আরো বেশি থাকাটা অস্বাভাবিক না‌‌।
সাথে এও আছে কথিত আর লিখিত ইংরেজির পরিবেশনের তফাৎটা চিন্তাবোধে অন্তর্ভুক্ত হয় না যার ফলে অনেকের ইংরেজি লেখাকালীন complex sentence তৈরি করতে এই ঘাটতি বাঁধা হয়ে দাঁড়ায়।
উদাহরণস্বরূপ ভিডিও দেখেন। এখানে ভুল নাই কিন্তু "anyone" আর "this" উভয়ই সর্বনাম হওয়াতে এইরকম স্বয়ংসম্পূর্ণ বাক্য শুনলে মাথার মধ্যে air raid siren বাজে। তবে বাক্যের শুরুতে, যেমন, "Don't tell anyone this but I heard that bro needs band 7 but can't lift English beyond band 6," কেউ বললে WhatsApp এ যোগাযোগের জন্য যুক্ত বোতামে টিপতে উৎসাহ দিবো।

"The first two years of life are critical for establishing the foundation of a child's future health and development. During this stage, infants are entirely dependent on educator and parents for their basic needs, including nutrition, safety, emotional security, and stimulation."

A student in Australia wrote this in a class report for some course for childcare certification. The feedback came back that she employed a very simple writing style and there were a number of grammatical errors.

How would I rank this in IELTS? 5.5 perhaps, other than writing structure there's a critical flaw because of just a single word, and it isn't even grammatical, it's technical/logical.

Here's the confusion: should I consider "emotional security" and "stimulation" as "basic needs" or should that word "basic" be removed to remove all ambiguity or a different word be used, like "all"/"every"?

Here's one correction: "The first two years of life are critical for establishing the foundation of a child's future health and development during which infants are dependent solely on educators and parents for all needs: nutritional, safety, emotional security, and stimulatory."

প্রতিদিনের চর্চায় তিন থেকে চার মাস লাগবে বেইসিক থেকে আইএল্টস ব্যান্ড ৬-য়ের কাছাকাছি উঠতে। কিন্তু এক মাসের জাদুকরী সমাধান খোঁজার পিছে সময়, শ্রম, আর অর্থ অনেকেরই ব্যয় করা হয়। আপনার ভাষার দক্ষতা একটা পর্যায়ে পৌঁছালে তখনই আইএল্টস কোর্স করে লাভবান হবেন। ভাষা না বুঝে না জেনে আইএল্টস কোর্স করে পরীক্ষায় কেমনে বুঝবেন কোথায় কি করা লাগে বা বসানো লাগে? যায় না।

এই বুঝটা গড়ার জন্য সবচাইতে সহজ উপায় হলো বাচ্চাদের বই পড়া দিয়ে শুরু করা। Tenses আর sentence structure দেখার পর বইগুলো পড়েন, সেই কাহিনীর সারমর্ম নিজের ভাষায় লিখে কাউকে অথবা এ.আই‌. দিয়ে চেক করান। এরকম মাসখানেক পর হয়তো পরের ধাপের জন্য প্রস্তুত হবেন। (হয়তো কারন আমি নিজে যেহেতু জড়িত না বলতে পারি না কে কোন পর্যায়ে থাকবেন।)

পরের ধাপ আগেরটার মতোই শুধু ছোটদের বই থেকে এখন উঠতি বয়সের (১২-১৬ বছর) বাচ্চাদের বই দিয়ে একই কাজ করবেন। এখানে দেড় মাসের মতো লাগবে।

বাকি সময়টা নেট থেকে বিভিন্ন বিষয় সম্বন্ধে আর্টিকেল পড়ে তা নিয়ে লিখার সাথে একটা ৩ মিনিট বক্তৃতাও তৈরি করে অন্য কাউকে দিয়ে চেক করাবেন।

প্রতিটা ধাপে ভালো মানের ইংরেজি অভিধান সাথে রাখবেন। অর্থাৎ ইংরেজি থেকে বাংলা অভিধান ব্যবহার করা যাবে না।

আশা করা যায় এভাবে পর্যায়ক্রমে অগ্রসর করে ইংরেজির প্রাথমিক যে জ্ঞান প্রয়োজন তা আয়ত্ত করে তারপর দরকার পড়লে আইএল্টস নির্দিষ্ট কোচিং করে নির্ভয়ে পরীক্ষায় অংশ নিতে পারবেন।

এসবের দরকার কি? এসব লাগে writing আর speaking এর মান বাড়াতে, যার সাথে reading আর listening ও উন্নত হয়। কেউ আপনাকে যদি বুঝাইতে যায় যে এটা নিষ্প্রয়োজন জেনে রাখেন এরা আপনার অসহায়ত্বের ফায়দা নিচ্ছে কোর্স বিক্রির ধান্দায়।

হ্যাঁ, সম্ভব। তবে শর্ত একটাই — আপনার ইংরেজির বেসিক ভালো থাকতে হবে।

যদি ইংরেজি আগে থেকেই কিছুটা জানা থাকে, তাহলে ১-২ সপ্তাহেও ভালোভাবে প্রস্তুতি নেয়া যায়।
তবে IELTS শুধু টিপস বা ট্রিকসের পরীক্ষা নয় — এটি আপনার বাস্তব ইংরেজি দক্ষতা যাচাই করে।
