Bangladesh's Youth: A Demographic Dividend or a ticking Time Bomb?
Bangladesh is at a crucial juncture, poised to either harness its vast youth population for unprecedented growth or risk social and economic instability. With nearly a third of its population under 30, the nation has a "demographic dividend" that, if properly leveraged, could propel it to new heights. The potential is immense: a large, energetic workforce ready to fuel industrial and technological advancement.
However, a significant challenge looms. Despite impressive economic growth, job creation has not kept pace with the influx of young people entering the job market. This has led to a worrying rate of educated unemployment. The education system, often criticized for its rote learning and lack of practical skills, is failing to produce graduates who are industry-ready. The result is a paradox: a huge pool of talent, yet a shortage of skilled workers in high-demand sectors like IT and manufacturing.
This mismatch is creating a sense of disillusionment and frustration among young people. Many are forced to take jobs below their qualifications or remain unemployed for extended periods. This not only represents a massive waste of human potential but also poses a serious threat to social cohesion. A large, unemployed, and frustrated youth population can be a breeding ground for social unrest and despair.
To turn this demographic dividend into a success story, the government and the private sector must act decisively. Firstly, educational reform is urgently needed. The curriculum must be modernized to focus on critical thinking, problem-solving, and vocational skills. Partnerships between educational institutions and industries should be encouraged to ensure that graduates possess the skills that the job market demands.
Secondly, a robust policy for job creation is essential. The government needs to incentivize private sector investment, particularly in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which are major employers. Moreover, fostering entrepreneurship through mentorship programs and access to finance can empower young people to become job creators rather than just job seekers.
Finally, we must address the social aspect of this challenge. Creating platforms for youth engagement, sports, and cultural activities can help channel their energy productively and foster a sense of belonging. The youth of Bangladesh are its greatest asset. It is a shared responsibility to ensure they are not left behind. Ignoring this challenge would be a grave mistake, one that could turn our demographic dividend into a ticking time bomb. The time to act is now.
