On September 5, 2026, the students of the Department of Energy Science and Engineering (Batch-2k21) embarked on a comprehensive day visit to the Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company (Pvt.) Limited (BIFPCL) and Petromax Refinery Ltd. This tour provided an invaluable opportunity to step out of the classroom and witness massive energy infrastructure in action.
At BIFPCL, students explored the practical mechanics of a thermal power plant, observing the core power generation processes from the ground up. The extensive tour covered massive-scale operations, starting from bulk coal unloading and meticulous fuel management, right through to the intricate workings of the boilers, turbines, and the heavy machinery that drives the facility. They were able to live-witness the plant's commitment to environmental mitigation, specifically the Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) system for emission control, high-efficiency Electrostatic Precipitators (ESPs) for capturing ash, and closed-loop cooling systems designed to protect the surrounding ecosystem. Living up to their motto, "Committed to Clean Power," the facility also consistently displays live emission readings at all times to ensure complete transparency.
The journey then continued to Petromax Refinery Ltd., where the focus shifted to the petrochemical sector and renewable energy integration. Here, students gained hands-on insight into complex refining processes, directly observing how Natural Gas Condensate (NGC) is fractionated and converted into valuable, market-ready petroleum products. Additionally, the students had the excellent opportunity to explore the facility's dedicated solar power plant, broadening their perspective on modern, diversified energy portfolios.
We extend our deepest gratitude to our Head of the Department, Professor Dr. Md. Shahidul Islam sir, and Professor Dr. Md. Shameem Hossain sir for their initiative and effort in arranging this outstanding educational tour.
A very special thanks goes to Engr. Jasim Ahmed Chowdhury (KUET ME-09) and Engr. Jabal-E-Noor Uchsash from BIFPCL for generously dedicating your time to show the students around the massive facility and patiently explaining its technical intricacies.
We also extend our sincere appreciation to the guiding team at Petromax Refinery Ltd.—specifically Engr. Md. Jahangir Alam, Engr. Rajon Kumar Saha, Engr. Siddiqur Rahman, Engr. Masud Karim, and Engr. Munshi Ataullah Masud—for warmly hosting us and expertly walking us through the refinery and solar operations.
Finally, a heartfelt thank you to our esteemed faculty members, Mr. Mostafizur Rahman sir and Mr. Golam Sharoar Fahim sir, for accompanying the students and actively sharing their invaluable knowledge and practical insights throughout the entire tour.
