Mexico is facing its most intense political unrest in years. Thousands of Gen Z protesters and citizens marched through Mexico City after the assassination of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Alberto Manzo Rodríguez — a vocal opponent of drug trafficking gangs. What began as a peaceful demonstration exploded into violent clashes outside the National Palace, where President Claudia Sheinbaum lives and works.
At least 120 people were injured, including 100 police officers, as protesters tore down metal barriers, threw projectiles, and chanted “We are all Carlos Manzo.” Police responded with shields, tear gas, and fire extinguishers.
Sheinbaum accuses right-wing political groups and foreign influences of infiltrating the Gen Z movement, while protesters blame the government for failing to stop cartel violence and high-profile assassinations.
