What is the IELTS test and how to prepare best for it?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the most widely used English language competence test in the world designed to assess the language proficiency of students who need to study or work where English is used as a form of communication. Scoring well on this test will get you one step further to be eligible to travel to 140 countries around the world and communicate fluently in English.

Before you begin learning IELTS, there are a few important things to keep in consideration. IELTS assessments are divided into two categories: academic and non-academic; you need to decide on the form of IELTS examination to appear for:

1. IELTS Academic Module
2. IELTS General Training Module

The objectives and test types of the two IELTS versions are different. You need to know in advance what kind of IELTS exam you should be preparing for to go abroad. However, no matter which IELTS test you want to take, there is no shortcut or secret method to score higher in just 24 hours of preparation. You just have to be more consistent about practicing each part in the best possible way. Regular practice will help you to check what stage of English proficiency you are at and how questions are set in the IELTS exam.

Next, it is time to set your IELTS score target. You need to aim for an IELTS score based on the country you want to go to or the purpose for which you want to go. If you have basic English proficiency skills, IELTS preparation will take not more than 3 months. In case you are not confident about the basics, you might need at least 6 months of complete preparation. The key is to find out your weaknesses after appearing in self-assessment tests. Plan about where you need to work on yourself or what you need to do more to have a perfect score.
A survey conducted by American Life found that 42% of graduate students are not into reading non-academic books, newspapers, or other study materials. This rate could be higher in our country whereas reading stories, dailies, articles, and passages are significant for learning English. This will help you to perform better in the speaking, reading, listening, and writing parts.

Learning vocabulary is crucial to succeeding in the IELTS test. Vocabulary is not just about memorizing but being able to use it in daily conversations. It is important to know the correct and accurate pronunciation of English words to achieve a good score. Finally, start practicing English with your friends, colleagues, and family members. You can try speaking English by practicing speaking in front of a mirror. Hope all these strategies will help you to achieve your desired score! All the best!
