Welcome to Day 3 of your training.
Today we tackle a topic that seems easy but often traps students into using very basic vocabulary: Food & Dining.
To get a Band 9, you must stop saying "It was delicious" or "I like cooking." We need to use "sensory vocabulary" and specific culinary terms.
📅 Day 3 Topic: Food & Culinary Habits
Part 1: Interview
The examiner asks about your eating habits.
Question: Do you enjoy cooking?
Band 9 Answer:
> "Absolutely. I find cooking to be incredibly therapeutic. After a long day, I love to get into the kitchen and whip up a meal from scratch. It’s a creative outlet for me, although I admit I’m not exactly a gourmet chef—I just enjoy experimenting with flavors."

* "Whip up": A phrasal verb meaning to cook something quickly.
* "From scratch": Cooking using raw ingredients, not pre-made packets.
* "Gourmet chef": Someone who cooks high-standard, fancy food.
Question: Do you have a healthy diet?
Band 9 Answer:
> "I try to maintain a balanced diet, but I do have a bit of a sweet tooth. During the week, I stick to wholesome, home-cooked meals with plenty of greens. However, on weekends, I tend to indulge in fast food or sugary treats as a reward."

* "Sweet tooth": A strong liking for sweet foods.
* "Wholesome": Good for your health (natural/unprocessed).
* "Indulge in": To allow yourself to have something enjoyable (usually unhealthy).
Part 2: The Cue Card (Describing an Experience)
Topic: Describe a meal you had that you really enjoyed.
You should say:
* When and where you had it
* Who you were with
* What you ate
* And explain why it was so enjoyable.
Band 9 Model Answer:
> "I’d like to talk about a dinner I had last month at a rustic Italian bistro in the city center to celebrate my best friend’s promotion.
> The Atmosphere:
> The restaurant had a wonderful ambiance—dim lighting, soft jazz music, and the smell of freshly baked bread wafting through the air. It was cozy and intimate, perfect for a celebration.
> The Food:
> I ordered the truffle pasta, which was simply exquisite. The pasta was handmade and cooked al dente, and the sauce was rich and creamy without being overpowering. It was a true gastronomic delight. We also shared a platter of appetizers that were mouth-watering.
> Why it was special:
> Aside from the phenomenal food, what made the evening memorable was the impeccable service and the company. We were so engrossed in our conversation that we completely lost track of time. It was one of those rare evenings where everything—the food, the mood, and the laughter—aligned perfectly."

* "Al dente": Italian term used in English meaning pasta cooked to be firm to the bite (shows specific knowledge).
* "Gastronomic delight": A very high-level phrase meaning "an amazing food experience."
* "Mouth-watering": Smelling or looking so good it makes you want to eat it immediately.
* "Impeccable service": Perfect service (waiters were polite/fast).
Part 3: Discussion (Global Issues)
Question: How have eating habits changed in your country over the last few decades?
Band 9 Answer:
> "There has been a dramatic shift. In the past, meals were strictly home-cooked and families would always eat together. Nowadays, with the rise of processed foods and food delivery apps, people are opting for convenience over nutrition.
> Unfortunately, this has led to a rise in lifestyle diseases. However, recently I’ve noticed a counter-trend where people are becoming more health-conscious and turning towards organic and plant-based diets."

* "Processed foods": Industrial food (chips, frozen meals).
* "Counter-trend": A trend that goes against the main trend.
* "Plant-based diet": A modern way of saying vegetarian/vegan-focused.

I want you to stop using the word "Delicious". It is too common.
Task: Rewrite the sentence below using one of these better words: "Exquisite," "Delectable," or "Savory."
* Basic Sentence: "My mother cooked a delicious chicken curry for lunch."
