Welcome to Day 3 of your training.
Today we tackle a topic that seems easy but often traps students into using very basic vocabulary: Food & Dining.
To get a Band 9, you must stop saying "It was delicious" or "I like cooking." We need to use "sensory vocabulary" and specific culinary terms.
📅 Day 3 Topic: Food & Culinary Habits
Part 1: Interview
The examiner asks about your eating habits.
Question: Do you enjoy cooking?
Band 9 Answer:
> "Absolutely. I find cooking to be incredibly therapeutic. After a long day, I love to get into the kitchen and whip up a meal from scratch. It’s a creative outlet for me, although I admit I’m not exactly a gourmet chef—I just enjoy experimenting with flavors."
>
🎓 Master's Notes:
* "Whip up": A phrasal verb meaning to cook something quickly.
* "From scratch": Cooking using raw ingredients, not pre-made packets.
* "Gourmet chef": Someone who cooks high-standard, fancy food.
Question: Do you have a healthy diet?
Band 9 Answer:
> "I try to maintain a balanced diet, but I do have a bit of a sweet tooth. During the week, I stick to wholesome, home-cooked meals with plenty of greens. However, on weekends, I tend to indulge in fast food or sugary treats as a reward."
>
🎓 Master's Notes:
* "Sweet tooth": A strong liking for sweet foods.
* "Wholesome": Good for your health (natural/unprocessed).
* "Indulge in": To allow yourself to have something enjoyable (usually unhealthy).
Part 2: The Cue Card (Describing an Experience)
Topic: Describe a meal you had that you really enjoyed.
You should say:
* When and where you had it
* Who you were with
* What you ate
* And explain why it was so enjoyable.
Band 9 Model Answer:
> "I’d like to talk about a dinner I had last month at a rustic Italian bistro in the city center to celebrate my best friend’s promotion.
> The Atmosphere:
> The restaurant had a wonderful ambiance—dim lighting, soft jazz music, and the smell of freshly baked bread wafting through the air. It was cozy and intimate, perfect for a celebration.
> The Food:
> I ordered the truffle pasta, which was simply exquisite. The pasta was handmade and cooked al dente, and the sauce was rich and creamy without being overpowering. It was a true gastronomic delight. We also shared a platter of appetizers that were mouth-watering.
> Why it was special:
> Aside from the phenomenal food, what made the evening memorable was the impeccable service and the company. We were so engrossed in our conversation that we completely lost track of time. It was one of those rare evenings where everything—the food, the mood, and the laughter—aligned perfectly."
>
🎓 Master's Notes:
* "Al dente": Italian term used in English meaning pasta cooked to be firm to the bite (shows specific knowledge).
* "Gastronomic delight": A very high-level phrase meaning "an amazing food experience."
* "Mouth-watering": Smelling or looking so good it makes you want to eat it immediately.
* "Impeccable service": Perfect service (waiters were polite/fast).
Part 3: Discussion (Global Issues)
Question: How have eating habits changed in your country over the last few decades?
Band 9 Answer:
> "There has been a dramatic shift. In the past, meals were strictly home-cooked and families would always eat together. Nowadays, with the rise of processed foods and food delivery apps, people are opting for convenience over nutrition.
> Unfortunately, this has led to a rise in lifestyle diseases. However, recently I’ve noticed a counter-trend where people are becoming more health-conscious and turning towards organic and plant-based diets."
>
🎓 Master's Notes:
* "Processed foods": Industrial food (chips, frozen meals).
* "Counter-trend": A trend that goes against the main trend.
* "Plant-based diet": A modern way of saying vegetarian/vegan-focused.
🚀 Your Mission for Today: Vocabulary Swap
I want you to stop using the word "Delicious". It is too common.
Task: Rewrite the sentence below using one of these better words: "Exquisite," "Delectable," or "Savory."
* Basic Sentence: "My mother cooked a delicious chicken curry for lunch."
Reply with your new sentence!

🗣️ Band 9 Model Response
Topic: Describe a memorable journey you have taken.
> "I’d like to recount a road trip I embarked on about two years ago, which remains vivid in my mind.
> Where and Who:
> I traveled to the northern highlands with two of my closest childhood friends. We had been planning to visit a remote valley known for its picturesque landscapes for ages, but our schedules had never aligned until that summer.
> What happened:
> The journey itself was meant to be a straightforward six-hour drive, but it turned into quite an adventure. About halfway there, our GPS failed completely because we lost signal in the mountains. We ended up taking a wrong turn onto a rough, unpaved road.
> At one point, we actually got a flat tire in the pouring rain. While it sounds like a nightmare, it was actually the highlight. We had to work together to change the tire in the mud, slipping and sliding around. We ended up laughing historically at the sheer absurdity of the situation. Once we got back on the road, the clouds cleared, and we were treated to the most spectacular sunset I have ever witnessed, painting the sky in hues of violet and orange.
> Why it was memorable:
> I think this journey is etched in my memory not because of the destination, but because of the camaraderie. The mishap with the tire forced us to disconnect from our phones and actually bond. It reminded me that sometimes, the unforeseen detours make for the best stories."
>
🎓 Master's Notes: Why this scores Band 9
1. Narrative Flow (Coherence):
I didn't just list facts. I told a story with a beginning (planning), a middle (getting lost/flat tire), and an end (sunset/arrival). This keeps the examiner listening.
2. Advanced Vocabulary:
* "Embarked on": A much more sophisticated way to say "started a trip."
* "Picturesque landscapes": Beautiful scenery (like a picture).
* "Etched in my memory": An idiom meaning "I will never forget it" (better than "It was memorable").
* "Camaraderie": A high-level word for friendship and trust built by spending time together.
* "Unforeseen detours": Unexpected changes in the route.
3. Grammar Check (Past Tenses):
Notice how I switched tenses naturally:
* "I traveled..." (Past Simple - main event)
* "We had been planning..." (Past Perfect Continuous - happened before the trip)
* "We were treated to..." (Passive Voice)
🚀 Your Turn: Grammar Drill
To get a high score, you must use the Past Perfect tense when talking about a journey (to show what happened before you left).
Fill in the blank to complete this Band 9 sentence:
"We were very excited because we ___________ (plan) this trip for months."
(Hint: Use "had been" + verb-ing)

Why the 22 Nov earthquake with M4.3 event was flagged as an anomaly rather than a standard "child" event:
1. Deviation from Bath's Law (Magnitude Ratio)
The Rule: Standard seismology (Bath's Law) states that the largest aftershock is typically 1.2 magnitude units smaller than the mainshock.
Mainshock: M5.5
Expected Max Aftershock: M4.3 or lower.
The Anomaly: The Nov 22 event was M4.3, putting it exactly at the upper limit of what is statistically "safe."
Why it matters: When an aftershock is this strong relative to the mainshock, it suggests the fault did not "relax" or settle. Instead, it indicates that the stress simply migrated to a nearby patch of the fault. The fault is still "fighting," not settling.
2. Violation of Omori's Law (The Decay Curve)
The Rule: Omori's Law dictates that aftershock frequency and energy should decay exponentially (like a cooling curve). By 24–36 hours post-mainshock, the energy release usually drops significantly (mostly M2.5s or M3.0s).
The Anomaly: The M4.3 event was a spike in the curve.
Visual Analogy: Imagine dropping a ball. It should bounce lower and lower. If the ball suddenly bounces nearly as high as the first drop, that is an anomaly. It means new energy was added to the system.
3. The "cascading" Effect (Resetting the Clock)
This is the most critical part of the ETAS model:
Standard View: The M5.5 is the Parent. The M4.3 is a Child.
ETAS View: Because the M4.3 was so strong, the model promotes it to a "Secondary Parent."
Result: The M4.3 is now generating its own sequence of aftershocks. The "72-hour safety clock" that started on Nov 21 didn't just continue; it restarted on Nov 22.
Summary: It is an anomaly because the M4.3 was too large and too energetic to be considered a passive settling of the ground. It signals that the Madhupur fault zone is still highly active, requiring the forecast window to be extended to Dec 05.
Start Date: November 22 (The M4.3 "Trigger" event).
The Calculation: In a "Locked Fault" system (where b-value < 0.9), a significant trigger event typically takes ~14 days (2 weeks) for its aftershock probability to drop back to the "background" safety level.
Result: Nov 22 + 14 Days = Dec 06.
Adjustment: The model predicts the highest danger is the first 90% of that window, tapering off slightly earlier, hence Dec 05.
