The IUT ABSSS family extends its warmest congratulations to one of our closesest members, Farshid Khan (IUT CEE '18), on successfully completing his Master of Science in Environmental Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, one of the world's most prestigious technical universities.

His graduation this Fall is a moment of immense pride for the entire IUT community, as he continues to represent our institution and country on a global stage.

On the February of 2026, our beloved Mahibur Alam Eshat (IUT CEE ’20), the founding Head of Administration of IUT ABSSS, began his postgraduate journey at The University of Western Australia, one of the world’s prestigious institutions, pursuing a Master of Engineering in Environmental Engineering. It is truly a matter of pride and joy for the entire IUT ABSSS community to witness one of our own achieving such a remarkable milestone.

His journey reflects dedication, hard work, and an inspiring commitment to academic excellence. IUT ABSSS proudly congratulates him and wishes him the very best in this new chapter of higher studies far away from home.

Research এর শুরুতে প্রায় সব নতুন গবেষকই একটি সাধারণ সমস্যার মুখে পড়েন। কিভাবে একটি Scientific Paper পড়তে হয়, কোন অংশে বেশি মনোযোগ দেওয়া উচিত এবং কীভাবে বোঝা যাবে লেখক আসলে কী বলতে চেয়েছেন।

এই প্রশ্নগুলোর উত্তর খুব সুন্দরভাবে দিয়েছেন Maureen A. Carey, Kevin L. Steiner, এবং William A. Petri Jr. তাঁদের গবেষণাপত্র “Ten Simple Rules for Reading a Scientific Paper”-এ।

চলুন এক নজরে দেখি এই দশটি নিয়মের মূল দিকগুলো —

নিয়ম ১: কেনো আপনি গবেষণাপত্রটি পড়ছেন তা আগে নির্ধারণ করুন

গবেষণাপত্র পড়া শুধু তথ্য জানার জন্য নয়, বরং নির্দিষ্ট উদ্দেশ্যে শেখার একটি প্রক্রিয়া। আপনি একটি গবেষণাপত্র থেকে কী জানতে বা শিখতে চান, সেটিই নির্ধারণ করবে আপনি কীভাবে সেটি পড়বেন। উদ্দেশ্য স্পষ্ট না থাকলে পড়া শুধু সময়ের অপচয় হবে। তাই প্রথমেই নিজের লক্ষ্য স্পষ্ট করুন।

নিয়ম ২: লেখকের উদ্দেশ্য বোঝার চেষ্টা করুন

প্রত্যেক গবেষণাপত্রের পেছনে একটি নির্দিষ্ট প্রেক্ষাপট থাকে। লেখক কেন এই গবেষণাটি করেছেন, কোন সমস্যাটি সমাধান করতে চেয়েছেন, এবং এটি পূর্ববর্তী গবেষণার সাথে কীভাবে সম্পর্কিত এই বিষয়গুলো বোঝা অত্যন্ত জরুরি।

নিয়ম ৩: ছয়টি প্রশ্ন করুন

গবেষণাপত্র পড়ার সময় নিজেকে ছয়টি মৌলিক প্রশ্ন করুন —

১. লেখক কী জানতে চেয়েছেন?

২. তারা কীভাবে তা করেছেন?

৩. কেন এই পদ্ধতিতেই কাজটি করা হয়েছে?

৪. ফলাফল কী দেখাচ্ছে?

৫. লেখক কীভাবে ফলাফল ব্যাখ্যা করেছেন?

৬. এরপর কী করা যেতে পারে? (গবেষণার ভবিষ্যৎ দিক বা সম্ভাব্য পরবর্তী ধাপ)

এই ছয়টি প্রশ্ন শুধু পুরো গবেষণাপত্রের জন্য নয়, বরং প্রতিটি টেবিল, ফিগার ও পরীক্ষার ক্ষেত্রেও প্রযোজ্য।

নিয়ম ৪: প্রতিটি ফিগার ও টেবিল ভালোভাবে বিশ্লেষণ করুন

গবেষণাপত্রের সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অংশ হলো ডেটা, যা সাধারণত ফিগার ও টেবিলের মাধ্যমে উপস্থাপিত হয়। প্রতিটি ফিগার দেখার সময় x-axis, y-axis, legend, scale, color use, এবং statistical analysis খেয়াল করুন। টেবিল পড়ার সময় variable, unit, sample size, ও summary information শনাক্ত করুন। প্রয়োজনে Methods section-এ ফিরে গিয়ে data collection ও analysis-এর প্রক্রিয়া যাচাই করুন। সবশেষে ভাবুন প্রতিটি ফিগার বা টেবিলের take-home message কী।

নিয়ম ৫: ফরম্যাটিংয়ের উদ্দেশ্য বোঝা

গবেষণাপত্রের প্রতিটি অংশের আলাদা উদ্দেশ্য থাকে। Results অংশে তথ্য উপস্থাপন করা হয়, আর Discussion অংশে লেখকের বিশ্লেষণ থাকে। তাই প্রতিটি সেকশনের উদ্দেশ্য বোঝার জন্য জার্নালের “For Authors” নির্দেশনা ভালোভাবে পড়া প্রয়োজন।

নিয়ম ৬: সমালোচনামূলকভাবে পড়ুন, তবে ভদ্র থাকুন।

গবেষণাপত্র পড়ার সময় কেবল তথ্য গ্রহণ নয়, তা বিশ্লেষণও করুন। লেখকের যুক্তি কতটা যথার্থ, কোনো বিকল্প ব্যাখ্যা সম্ভব কি না, তা ভেবে দেখুন। তবে সমালোচনায় ভদ্রতা বজায় রাখুন এবং তা যেন সবসময় গঠনমূলক হয়। গবেষণাপত্র পড়া মানে যুক্তিনির্ভরভাবে চিন্তা করা, প্রশ্ন তোলা, এবং প্রয়োজনে নিজের ধারণাকেও নতুনভাবে ভাবা।

নিয়ম ৭: সদয় হোন

গবেষণাপত্রের লেখকরাও মানুষ। তাই যতটা সম্ভব তাদের প্রতি সহানুভূতিশীল থাকুন। কোনো বাক্য বা ধারণা বুঝতে না পারলে ধৈর্য ধরে পড়ুন। ছোটখাটো ভুলে হতাশ না হয়ে মূল কাজের মানে মনোযোগ দিন। সমালোচনা করতে হলে ভদ্রভাবে করুন, কারণ একটি গবেষণাপত্রের পেছনে বছরের পর বছর পরিশ্রম থাকে। সদয় ও গঠনমূলক মন্তব্যই গবেষণার ইতিবাচক সংস্কৃতি গড়ে তোলে।

নিয়ম ৮: একটু বাড়তি পরিশ্রম করুন

একটি গবেষণাপত্র সত্যিকারভাবে বুঝতে হলে কেবল একবার পড়ে থেমে যাওয়া যথেষ্ট নয়। অনেক সময় আপনাকে অতিরিক্ত পরিশ্রম করতে হয়। অপরিচিত পরিভাষা খুঁজে দেখা, প্রাসঙ্গিক ব্যাকগ্রাউন্ড পড়া বা লেখকের রেফারেন্স গবেষণাপত্রলো পর্যবেক্ষণ। অনেকে বলেন একটি গবেষণাপত্র তিনবার পড়া উচিত: প্রথমবার শুধু বোঝার চেষ্টা ছাড়াই পড়ুন, দ্বিতীয়বার বুঝতে চেষ্টা করুন, আর তৃতীয়বার নোট নিন। আপনি যেভাবেই পড়ুন না কেন, নিজের জন্য সবচেয়ে কার্যকর উপায়টি অনুসরণ করুন।

নিয়ম ৯: আলোচনা করুন

গবেষণাপত্র নিয়ে আলোচনা করলে বোঝার গভীরতা বাড়ে। Journal Club, ল্যাব মিটিং বা সহকর্মীদের সঙ্গে আলোচনায় অংশ নিন। গবেষণাপত্র নিয়ে কথা বললে নিজের চিন্তাভাবনা পরিষ্কার হয় এবং অন্যের দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি থেকেও শেখা যায়। “To teach is to learn twice” কথাটি এখান থেকেই এসেছে।

নিয়ম ১০: শিখে পড়া এবং পড়তে পড়তে শেখা

গবেষণাপত্র পড়ার আসল উদ্দেশ্য শুধু বোঝা নয়, বরং শেখা বিষয়গুলোকে নিজের গবেষণায় প্রয়োগ করা। প্রতিটি গবেষণাপত্র একেকটি জ্ঞানের ইটের মতো, যা একত্রে একটি শক্তিশালী ভিত্তি গড়ে তোলে। আপনি যখন কোনো গবেষণাপত্র পড়ছেন, তখন চেষ্টা করুন এটি কীভাবে অন্য গবেষণার ধারণা, পদ্ধতি বা ফলাফলের সঙ্গে সম্পর্কিত তা বোঝার। যত গভীরভাবে বিশ্লেষণ করবেন, তত নতুন প্রশ্ন, নতুন আগ্রহ এবং নতুন গবেষণার দিক উন্মোচিত হবে। এভাবেই গড়ে ওঠে “active reading” যেখানে পড়া মানে শুধু তথ্য গ্রহণ নয়, বরং সেই জ্ঞান থেকে নতুন চিন্তা ও গবেষণার পথ তৈরি করা।

গবেষণাপত্র পড়া কোনো জন্মগত দক্ষতা নয়। এটি নিয়মিত চর্চা ও অভিজ্ঞতার মাধ্যমে গড়ে তুলতে হয়। নিয়মিত চর্চা করলে আপনি শুধু ভালো পাঠকই হবেন না, বরং আরও দক্ষ ও সৃজনশীল গবেষক হয়ে উঠবেন।
