You may have heard of resveratrol as the compound behind red wine's healthy reputation. What is less known is how much attention it has drawn from cancer researchers.
Found in grape skins, berries, and peanuts, resveratrol has been studied extensively in the laboratory. In those studies it stopped breast, colon, prostate, and liver cancer cells from dividing, effectively freezing them mid-cycle, and pushed them toward apoptosis, the body's natural way of clearing out damaged cells. It appears to work by switching on the body's own protective, longevity-linked pathways while switching off the inflammation and survival signals cancer cells depend on.
Two honest notes. First, this research was done on cells in the laboratory, not in people, so it is a promising area of study rather than a treatment. Second, this is not a reason to drink wine, the amounts used in research are far higher than anything a glass provides, and alcohol carries its own well-established cancer risk. Eating whole grapes and berries is the far better route.
