Like all other tragedies of O' Neill, The Hairy Ape is a modern tragedy. The play shows his democratic conception of tragedy. The play reflects the sorrow, suffering, misfortunes, frustration and miserable end of life. But This is not a classical or Greek tragedy. It is not the tragedy of a great dignity. The play represents the sorrows and sufferings of working class man and the people of his class. In the classical tragedy man suffers because he has a tragic flaw and at the same time the fate conspires against him. But here in the present play there is no tragic flaw of the protagonist. The tragic figures suffers only for the indifference of the society.

Yoyng Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Howthrone reflects very faithfully the values of puritanism of the people of Salem village in Massachusetts. The earlier setters of Salem, Massachusetts, were mostly staunch Puritans and they had a very rigid and stern outlook about life. Their descendants inherited more or less their forefathers' spirit of puritanism. The theme of the present story is the fall of man from the height of innocence through the temptation of curiosity into the dark forest of sin.
At the surface level the story tells the story of a man called Young Goodman Brown who leaves his newly married wife and goes out into a forest of evil to see things there out of curiosity. But at the deeper level the author intends to say something serious about the original sin of man. In reality, the short story represents the process of man's digression from the height of innocence, hope and religious faiths into the pit of experience, skepticism and faithlessness. The theme of the story is in agreement with puritanic values.
Something about 'Of Great Place'
Men in great place are servant of three things: the servant of state, the servant of fame, and the servant of business. Hence such people don’t have any sort of freedom at all. They don’t have any Liberty to do something. They can not act freely. Even they can not spend their time with their own choice. Bacon says that it is a strange desire of man to attain some power by losing liberty. Bacon argues that in order to attain power over another man, loses power over himself. He is the puppet in the hands of authority.
Bacon argues that how man reaches the high position in politics. He says that if a man wants to reach a great place, he has to do certain things that may not morally right. It is through the indignities that man comes to dignities. One has to corrupt himself and should compromise over certain things to make oneself a great man. But this position is not permanent resulting a downfall.
