Bangladesh's 2024 "July Revolution," also known as the Quota Reform Movement, was a massive, student-led uprising sparked by demands for merit-based government jobs, evolving into a nationwide protest against authoritarian rule, corruption, and systemic injustice, culminating in the ousting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the establishment of a temporary government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, marking a significant democratic resurgence after violent state crackdowns and widespread civilian participation.
The movement began in June/July 2024 when students, united under groups like "Students Against Discrimination," protested the reinstatement of discriminatory job quotas, particularly for descendants of Liberation War veterans. When the government responded with extreme violence, including the "July Massacre" where hundreds were killed by state forces, the protests swelled into a powerful non-cooperation movement involving people from all walks of life, tired of decades of autocratic rule. This mass uprising forced the government's collapse, with the Prime Minister fleeing on August 5, 2024, and led to a new interim administration under Dr. Yunus by early September, solidifying the movement as a fight for freedom, justice, and democracy.
