HAPPY “INTERNATIONAL MOTHER LANGUAGE DAY"
Quoting Wikipedia:
“International Mother Language Day (IMLD) is a worldwide annual observance held on 21 February to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and promote multilingualism. First announced by UNESCO on 17 November 1999, it was formally recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in a resolution establishing 2008 as the International Year of Languages”.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Mother_Language_Day
The reason that the 21st February has been adopted as the IMLD is that, on this day in 1952, something the native Bangla speakers (NBS) did for their native language that no other native speakers of any other languages did before.
Before 1971, Bangladesh was East Pakistan in which people’s native language was Bangla. Before February 21, 1952, the government functionally denied their natural right to use their language effectively. In protest, on that day, the NBS came on the street and demanded the right. And the government retaliated. The government started shooting randomly at the people and killed many.
Many NBS died but, ultimately, the government was forced to grant them the right to effectively use their mother language Bangla.
In the history of mankind, this was the first incident of this kind: People gave their lives to secure the right to use their mother language.
