Denmark's Ministry of Immigration and Integration has unveiled new measures to curb the misuse of study stays, particularly by students from Bangladesh and Nepal. Announced on September 19, the policy aims to prevent the student visa program from being exploited as a means to access the Danish labor market.
The new measures will make it significantly harder for Bangladeshi students to gain admission to Danish universities if they do not meet the required academic qualifications. Additionally, the government will restrict the ability of international students to bring family members or dependents to Denmark and will shorten the post-study work permit period from three years to one.
Denmarkâs then Minister of Immigration and Integration, Kaare Dybvad Bek, stated, âThe curriculum has been exploited as a backdoor to the Danish labour market. We are now taking action against this.â This follows a notable increase in the number of students and their families from Bangladesh and Nepal, who, according to the ministry, have shown higher dropout rates compared to other international students.
A recent survey by Denmark's Ministry of Higher Education and Science revealed troubling trends among Bangladeshi students at Danish universities. The survey found that nearly one-third of Bangladeshi students at Aarhus University did not appear to be study-focused, with motivations leaning more toward staying in Denmark. The first-year dropout rate for Bangladeshi students was 13%, significantly higher than the 4% rate for other international students. Moreover, their exam attendance and pass rates were considerably lower.
In response to these findings, Denmark has decided to implement stronger regulations to ensure that study stays remain focused on academics rather than being used as a means to stay in the country for work. Minister Christina Egelund emphasized that the initiative would not close the door to talented students who genuinely wish to complete their education in Denmark but would target those exploiting the system.
In the wake of these developments, the Bangladesh Embassy in Copenhagen issued a statement on September 25, acknowledging the situation and reassuring the public that the embassy is in contact with Danish authorities to ensure that Bangladeshi students in Denmark do not face discrimination or complications.
