Some Commonly Misused Words

Use of Common Prepositions.

Preposition

Vocabulary related to geographic landforms.

:: Vocabulary Part 1 :: শব্দ-শিক্ষা (ইংরেজি)
(a) Latin "centum" means 100. A "century" is 100 years. A "cent" is the 100th part of a dollar. A "centimetre" is the 100th part of a metre. "Ten percent" means ten out of every 100. "Centennial" combines "centum" (meaning 100) and "enn"-from "annus" (meaning year). A "centennial" is the celebration of 100 years. "Bicentennial" combines "bi" (meaning 2) and "centennial" (meaning celebration of 100 years). So "bicentennial" means celebration of 200 years. "Sesquicentennial" combines "sesqui" meaning 150 and "centennial" meaning 100 years' celebration. So "Sesquicentennial" means celebration of 150 years. "Tri-centennial" combines "tri" meaning 3 and "centennial" meaning 100 years' celebration. So "tri-centennial" means celebration of 300 years. "Semi-centennial" combines "semi" (meaning half) and "centennial" (meaning 100 years' celebration). So "semi-centennial" means celebration of 50 years. "Centenary" also means centennial. A "centenarian" is a person who is 100 years old. "Centennially" means after every 100 years. "Centennialize" means to organize 100 years' celebration.
