The students of private universities of Bangladesh took part in the protest rally under the banner of “No VAT on education” on Wednesday.
In the proposed budget of 2015-16, the government imposes 10% VAT on private universities, medicals and engineering colleges for the first time in the country.
Later, the VAT was reduced to 7.5% from the proposed 10% following request by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
But, the students have been demanding withdrawal of VAT from the educational institutions.

Be cautious in 18 private varsities admission: UGC

DHAKA: The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Monday urged admission seekers to be careful about taking admission in 18 private universities, which are facing various problems including cases.
The UGC authorities advised the admission seekers and guardians to take decisions after scrutinizing some essential information before taking admissions in private universities.
UGC published a list of those 18 universities. Of them, all the campuses of Darul Ihsan University, all the campuses of Prime University except the main campus at Mirpur-1 in city, three campuses of Southern University—(i) MM Ali Road Dampara, (ii) OR Nizam Road, GEC and (iii) Halisahar, Chittagong, two outer campuses of Northern University in Rajshahi and Khulna, OR Nizam Road Campus of BGC Trust University in Chittagong, Mohammadpur and Uttara campuses of IBAIS University in Dhaka have been teaching by taking stay order from the court.
The six private universities, that are running campuses illegally disregarding UGC orders, are Atish Dipankar Science & Technology University at Uttara Sector-6, Sector-11, ARA Center Campus at Panthapath, Purana Paltan Campus and Mirpur-1 Campus in Dhaka, Uttar Badda and Purana Paltan Campuses of the The People’s University of Bangladesh, Bahaddarhat (Female branch) Campus of International Islamic University in Chittagong, South Kalyanpur Campus of Shanto-Mariam University of Creative Technology in Dhaka, Mirpur Road (Opposite of Dhaka College) Campus and Karwan Bazar Campus of Northern University in Dhaka and Boyra Campus in Khulna, Majampur Campus in Kushtia, Dhanmondi Campus in city, Lalbagh Campus in Rangpur of Southern University.
Two universities, running by taking stay order of the court though closed by the government are (1) BTI Bhaban, Farmgate Campus, 71/C Asad Avenue Campus, 107/1 Box Culvert Road at Naya Paltan Campus, Sat Masjid Road Campus, 159/D Tejgaon Industrial Area Campus, 33 Topkhana Road Campus, Mirpur-1 Campus, Uttara (Sector-7) Campus, Jatrabari Campus, Gulshan-Badda Link Road Campus, Banani Campus, Rai Saheb Bazar University and Kaziapara, Mirpur Campus in city, Gazipur Chourastha Campus, Tin Matha Campus in Bogra and Talaimari Campus in Rajshahi of America-Bangladesh University and Banani Campus of Queen’s University.
Besides, four universities are facing cases over Board of Trustees clash—Darul Ihsan University, IBAIS University, Prime University and Southern University of Bangladesh, Chittagong.
The UGC statement also said that they could not take actions against the universities as they took stay order from the court.
