Kusumba Mosque: Living Heritage & Ritual Practice
Kusumba Mosque is not just an architectural masterpiece from the Sultanate period—
it is a living heritage, where history and spirituality meet every single day.
Built in 1558–59 under Ghiyasuddin Bahadur Shah, this stone-built mosque stands as one of the finest examples of Bengal’s black-stone architecture. But beyond its beauty, what truly makes Kusumba special is how ritual practice still continues within its historic walls, connecting present-day worshippers with centuries of tradition.
✨ Why Kusumba Mosque Matters Today
• It remains an active centre of daily prayers, preserving the essence of community life.
• Local people maintain its sanctity through traditional customs and seasonal rituals.
• The site embodies the continuity of cultural identity — proving that heritage is not just something we visit, but something we live.
🕰 A Space Where Past and Present Coexist
Every prayer call, every footprint on its stone floor, and every gathering during festivals reminds us that Kusumba Mosque is more than an archaeological monument. It is a bridge between generations — a testimony to how heritage becomes meaningful when communities keep it alive.
As archaeologists and heritage lovers, it is our responsibility to protect this delicate bond between structure and practice, ensuring that places like Kusumba continue to inspire, heal, and connect.
📌 Let us celebrate Kusumba Mosque as both history and living culture.

The Last Glimpse of Tetulia’s Colonial-Era Mosque
One of Tetulia’s oldest structures, the British-period mosque once known for its green façade, crafted arches, decorative plasterwork, and Indo-Saracenic symmetry, has now been demolished to make way for a larger modern mosque. For decades, its slender pillars, balanced arches, and brick-lime construction stood as a silent witness to the area’s early settlement history.
Today, only broken walls and piles of rubble remain as workers clear the site for new construction. While the upcoming mosque will be modern and spacious, the loss marks the end of an important architectural and cultural chapter of Tetulia.
