The Department of Business Administration, University of Asia Pacific (UAP) participated in a knowledge-sharing session on the Bangladesh Purchasing Managersโ€™ Index (PMI), organized by the Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dhaka (MCCI) in collaboration with Policy Exchange Bangladesh (PEB), with technical support from the Singapore Institute of Purchasing and Materials Management (SIPMM) and funding from UK International Development.

The session provided students and faculty members with an in-depth understanding of the Purchasing Managersโ€™ Index (PMI)โ€”a data-driven economic indicator that provides an early indication of the direction of economic activity. Beyond measuring overall business conditions, PMI can help identify turning points in the business cycle and track key economic variables before conventional economic indicators, such as quarterly GDP figures are available. The program covered the purpose, benefits, distinctive features, methodology, and interpretation of PMI, with particular emphasis on Bangladeshโ€™s four major sectors: agriculture, manufacturing, services, and construction.

An important aspect of the discussion was understanding the credibility and reliability of PMI data, including how business responses (i.e., insights from senior executives) are collected, processed, and converted into an index through a standardized and software-based methodology. This highlighted the importance of PMI as a structured source of real-world economic information rather than merely a measure of procurement activity.

The session also emphasized that PMI has relevance far beyond procurement and supply chain management. Its insights can support decision-making and analysis across marketing, finance, economics, operations, business strategy, investment, and other fields, making it a valuable tool for students and professionals seeking to understand changing business conditions.

The session presented insights from Mr. Kamran T. Rahman, President, MCCI; Mr. Farooq Ahmed, Secretary-General & CEO, MCCI; Mr. Hasnat Alam, Economist & Senior Manager, PEB; Mr. Md. Hassib Hassan, Programme Coordinator, PEB; and Dr. M. Masrur Reaz, Chairman & CEO, PEB, alongside faculty members, students, and media representatives.

UAP was represented by Dr. Shamsad Ahmed, Professor; Dr. Shahriar Kabir, Assistant Professor; and Dr. Tahmina Khan Tithi, Assistant Professor, together with participating DBA students.

The session offered a valuable opportunity to connect academic learning with real-time economic data, encouraging students to look beyond theoretical concepts and develop a deeper understanding of how business intelligence, analytics and economic indicators can lead to prudent decision-making in the real world.
