🏆 Proud Achievement for NDUB Microbiology! đŸĻ đŸŒ

We are delighted to share that Shanin Alam Goongoon, a student of MICR-3, Department of Microbiology, Notre Dame University Bangladesh (NDUB), has secured 3rd Position in the “Science in Slides” segment of the 2nd Bangladesh Science Exposium 2026, organized by the Dhaka University Science Society (DUSS).
📌 Presentation Topic:
“Climate Change: Adaptation vs Mitigation — What Should Science Focus On?”
In her presentation, Shanin explored the important relationship between microorganisms and climate change, highlighting how microorganisms influence climate processes and how microbiological knowledge and innovation can contribute to both climate-change mitigation and adaptation.
The presentation was held on 1 August 2026, and she was officially awarded her 3rd Position prize on 15 September 2026. đŸŽ–ī¸
She also participated in the “Science in Poster” segment with the thought-provoking topic:

Her participation in both segments reflects the growing enthusiasm of our students toward scientific communication, interdisciplinary research, and addressing global challenges through microbiology and science.

A Heartfelt Farewell to Our Honorable Vice Chancellor Dr. Father Patrick Daniel Gaffney, CSC
The faculty members and students of the Department of Microbiology, Notre Dame University Bangladesh (NDUB) had the privilege of presenting a small token of love and appreciation to our honorable Vice Chancellor Dr. Father Patrick Daniel Gaffney, CSC on the occasion of his farewell as he prepares to leave for the USA.
Throughout his tenure, Father has made significant contributions to the development and smooth functioning of our Department and also the other Departments of NDUB as well. He served for about 10 years at NDUB. His constant support, encouragement, and guidance have always inspired us and strengthened our academic community.
We are truly grateful for his invaluable contributions and the kindness he has shown toward the Department of Microbiology and its students.

From Bangladesh to the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, USA — and Back with Knowledge, Experience, and Inspiration!
We are delighted to welcome back Prionti Laticia Rebeiro and Raheel Binte Ferdaush, two outstanding students from the Department of Microbiology, Notre Dame University Bangladesh (NDUB), after successfully completing the prestigious iSURE (International Summer Undergraduate Research Experience) program at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, USA.
Over the course of eight weeks, they immersed themselves in an international research environment, working alongside researchers and fellow students from different parts of the world. Beyond gaining hands-on laboratory experience, they explored advanced research methodologies, strengthened their scientific communication skills, and built meaningful cross-cultural friendships.
During the program, they contributed to a pharmaceutical quality analysis research project involving HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography). Initially trained using amoxicillin, they later participated in developing an analytical method for azithromycin, which enabled the successful evaluation of 26 antibiotic samples collected from Malawi. Their work demonstrated that 25 samples met quality standards, while one sample required further attention—highlighting the importance of analytical research in ensuring medicine quality and global public health.
One of the major highlights of the program was the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Presentation, where they presented their research in a clear and engaging manner for a broad audience, demonstrating not only their scientific understanding but also their ability to communicate complex ideas effectively.
Adding to this remarkable achievement, both students were recognized among the outstanding participants of the summer programs and received certificates during the closing ceremony—a proud accomplishment for themselves and for NDUB.
Their journey was not limited to the laboratory. They had the opportunity to experience life in the United States, visit nearby cities and attractions, interact with people from diverse cultures, and gain memories and friendships that will last a lifetime. These experiences have broadened their perspectives, strengthened their confidence, and inspired them for future academic and research endeavors.
We are immensely proud of Prionti and Raheel for representing Notre Dame University Bangladesh with dedication, professionalism, and excellence on an international platform. We believe the knowledge, skills, and experiences they have brought home will inspire many more students to pursue global research opportunities.

It was a memorable and heartfelt farewell organized by the Department of Microbiology, Notre Dame University Bangladesh (NDUB), at 28th July, 2026 to celebrate the exciting new journeys of our respected faculty members, Lecturer Supantha Rivu and Lecturer Tasnimul Arabi Anik, as they embark on their PhD studies in the United States.
Supantha Rivu will be pursuing his PhD at the University of Southern Mississippi, while Tasnimul Arabi Anik will begin his doctoral journey at Purdue University. We are immensely proud of their achievements and wish them every success in this new chapter of their academic careers.
The program featured shared memories with Supantha Rivu and Tasnimul Arabi Anik from our respected Chairman, Prof. Dr. Shahidul Kabir, Lecturer Farjana Afroj, Lecturer Ahmad Abdullah Mahdeen, our two departing faculty members and, the beloved students who shared their experiences, gratitude, and aspirations for the future. The gathering became even more special as our students shared their cherished memories, organized the entire event with great enthusiasm, and presented thoughtful farewell gifts as tokens of love and appreciation.

We are delighted to welcome Sugandha Paul as a Lecturer in the Department of Microbiology at Notre Dame University Bangladesh (NDUB).

Sugandha Paul is a microbiologist, researcher, and academic specializing in microbial biotechnology, molecular microbiology, bioinformatics, microbial enzyme technology, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and sustainable agricultural microbiology.

She earned both her Master of Science (M.S.) and Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Microbiology from Noakhali Science and Technology University (NSTU), Bangladesh.

Prior to this appointment, she served as a Lecturer at the Bangladesh University of Health Sciences (BUHS), where she taught undergraduate and postgraduate microbiology courses and supervised student research.

She also worked as a Senior Microbiologist in the Research and Development Division of Apex Biofertilizers and Biopesticides Limited, contributing to the development of sustainable microbial formulations for biofertilizer production, and as a Postgraduate Research Fellow at the National Institute of Biotechnology (NIB), where she conducted research in microbial biotechnology, molecular biology, enzyme technology, and bioinformatics.

Her research focuses on microbial biotechnology, molecular biology, microbial enzyme production, antimicrobial resistance, environmental and clinical microbiology, genomics, and bioinformatics. She has contributed to several research projects involving microbial enzyme development, gene cloning, recombinant protein production, sustainable biofertilizers, and microbial characterization. Her scholarly work includes publications and conference presentations in microbiology and biotechnology, and she has been awarded the National Science and Technology Fellowship for her outstanding M.Sc. research on microbial isolation, enzyme production, and molecular characterization. She is committed to advancing microbiological research while promoting excellence in higher education, scientific innovation, and student mentorship.

We are delighted to welcome Dr. Hridika Talukder Barua as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology at Notre Dame University Bangladesh (NDUB).

Dr. Hridika Talukder Barua is a microbiologist, researcher, and public health professional specializing in antimicrobial resistance (AMR), clinical microbiology, molecular diagnostics, and cancer biology.

She earned her PhD in Cancer Biology from the School of Medicine, Deakin University, Australia, where her doctoral research focused on the development of a novel exosome-based diagnostic assay for the early detection of pancreatic cancer. She also holds a Master of Science (M.S.) and a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Microbiology from the University of Chittagong, Bangladesh.

Dr. Barua has extensive experience in antimicrobial resistance surveillance, laboratory strengthening, and public health research. As the CAPTURA Project Coordinator at the International Vaccine Institute (IVI), she led national AMR initiatives in Bangladesh, providing technical leadership for AMR surveillance, antimicrobial stewardship, monitoring and evaluation, and policy implementation in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, WHO, and other national and international partners under the One Health framework.
