🇺🇲 U.S. Undergrad Application Part 1: Importance of SAT & SAT Prep

Hello, everyone. Hope you are doing well. This is Ariyan, a full-ride recipient from Bennington. On this page, I'll constantly post content about how U.S. applications work, how to apply for free without any paid mentorship or cohorts, and share all the materials you'll ever need, among other study abroad-related content.

This is the first part, where we will be talking about the SAT and how to prepare for it.🎯

For reference, I come from a Bangla-medium background and scored a 1550 (Math-800; EBRW-750) in 2 months! So, feel free to follow the page to stay updated, and let's get started!!

1️⃣ First of all, what is the SAT?
SAT বা Scholastic Assessment Test একটা standardized test, যা College Board পরিচালনা করে। এটা মূলত U.S.-এর high school (grade 9–12) ছাত্ররা college admission-এর জন্য দিয়ে থাকে।

এখন একটা গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কথা—COVID-19 pandemic-এর পর অনেক university SAT-কে optional (test-optional) করে দিয়েছে। মানে SAT না দিলেও apply করা যায়। কিন্তু এর মানে এই না যে SAT-এর গুরুত্ব কমে গেছে। বরং একটা ভালো SAT score তোমার application-কে অনেক বেশি strong করে তোলে। SAT score scholarship পাওয়ার ক্ষেত্রেও অনেক সাহায্য করে, especially international students-দের জন্য।💸

বাংলাদেশ থেকে অনেক student SAT দিয়ে full and partial scholarship পেয়ে থাকে। আর একটা misconception হলো—SAT শুধু USA-তেই লাগে। আসলে তা না। SAT score অনেক জায়গায় useful, e.g., Türkiye Bursları, Stipendium Hungaricum, Canada, Japan, UAE, Europe-এর অনেক university। মানে globally এটা একটা recognized test। 📢

2️⃣ Second, the structure of the SAT:
SAT একটা 1600-mark-এর exam — 800 Math, 800 English। English part-এ Reading আর Writing থাকে, আর Math আলাদা section।

English-এ 2টা module থাকে, প্রতি module-এ 27টা করে question। Math-এও 2টা module থাকে, প্রতি module-এ 22টা করে question।

Examটা এখন adaptive — মানে প্রথম module-এ কেমন করছো তার উপর depend করে পরের module easy বা hard হবে। তাই first moduleটা খুব important। ⚠️

Math honestly অনেক easy। এখানে অনেকেই প্রশ্ন করে, “আমি Math-এ ভালো না” বা “আমি commerce/arts background, আমার দিয়ে SAT হবে?” — to be honest, SAT-এর English-এর তুলনায় Math অনেক easy। ঘুরে ফিরে class 7–10-এর basic (algebra, equation, ratio, graph) থেকেই question আসে। একটু ভালো মতো dedicated হয়ে practice করলে 790–800 পাওয়া totally possible।🔥

কিন্তু Englishটা একটু tricky। SAT-এর English-এ শুধু proficiency থাকলেই ভালো করা যায় না। এখানে vocabulary skills, comprehension skills, time management — এই সবগুলো একসাথে strong থাকতে হয়। অনেক সময় sentence-এর সব word জানা থাকলেও পুরো meaning ধরা যায় না — এই জায়গাটাই main challenge।

আরেকটা common question — “ভালো score কত?”🤔

Generally, 1400-এর উপরে score almost সব university-এর জন্যই competitive। কিন্তু top schools যেমন Cornell University, Dartmouth College — এসব জায়গার জন্য 1500–1550+ থাকলে safe বলা যায়।✅

আরেকটা important জিনিস — examটা এখন digital, Bluebook অ্যাপে দিতে হয়। তোমাকে test center-এ গিয়েই নিজের laptop দিয়ে exam দিতে হবে। যদি নিজের device না থাকে, তাহলে আগেই request করলে center থেকে device provide করে। কিন্তু যেভাবেই দাও, examটা digitally দিতে হবে। কোনো negative marking নাই, তাই guess করা safe।

আর multiple বার SAT দেওয়া যায়। এই জায়গাটায় superscore জিনিসটা আসে। মানে তুমি যদি একবার Math-এ ভালো করো, আরেকবার English-এ ভালো করো — university তোমার দুইবারের best part গুলো নিয়ে combine করে।

3️⃣ Third, the importance of the SAT:
U.S. application আসলে অনেক কিছুর উপরই depend করে, কারণ এটা একটা holistic process। You ask, holistic process কী? সেটা নিয়ে আমরা পরে কথা বলবো, কিন্তু ছোট করে বলতে গেলে holistic process বলতে বুঝায় আমাদের application একটা factor, যেমন extracurricular activity বা SAT-এর উপর নির্ভর করে না। Universityগুলো admission offer generally দিয়ে থাকে অনেকগুলো factor-এর mixture-এ।

এখন প্রশ্ন হলো, তারপরও SAT এত জরুরি কেন, যদি এটা optional হয়ে থাকে?💭

I. শুধু মাত্র SAT-এর উপর depend করে অনেক university-তে full-tuition scholarship পাওয়া যায়, যেটা অনেক ভালো backup হিসেবে কাজ করে (example: The University of Texas at Arlington, Texas Tech University, The University of Alabama, The University of Southern Mississippi, and more)। U.S. application সত্যি বলতে low EFC (বা সহজ ভাষায়, যারা middle class বা university-কে কম টাকা দিতে পারবে) students-দের জন্য অনেক tough, তাই proper backup রাখা সবারই উচিত।

II. এই postটা যারা পড়তেছে তাদের মধ্যে বেশির ভাগ student-ই বাংলা মিডিয়াম student। খারাপ লাগলেও সত্যি, কিন্তু আমাদের curriculum worldwide খুব একটা valued না। এমনকি UK-এর অনেক top university আর Australia-এর GO8 university-এর অনেক university-ই directly NCTB students গ্রহণ করে না। যদিও U.S. university-তে apply করার এমন কোনো strict rule নাই, তবুও NCTB curriculum-এর value কমই থেকে যায় বাকি আরো curriculum-এর (AP, IB Diploma, বা A Levels, for example) তুলনায়।

তাছাড়া সত্যি বলতে আমরা সবাই জানি বাংলাদেশের GPA 5-এর scenario। প্রায় সবারই SSC, HSC-তে A+ (আমার একটাতেও নাই haha) থাকায় admission officers-রা বুঝতেই পারে না যে একটা student-এর academic caliber কিরকম। এখানেই game changer হিসেবে কাজ করে SAT। SAT-এ ভালো একটা score থাকলে admission officers-রা বুঝতে পারে যে student-এর academic caliber কেমন, যেটা admission পেতে আর scholarship পেতেও দুটোতেই help করে।

III. যারা top university, যেমন Harvard University, Dartmouth College, Cornell University aim করতেছো, তাদের জন্য SATটা MUST, কারণ এরকম অনেক top university এখন test-required হয়ে গিয়েছে। অর্থাৎ তোমার SAT বা ACT (এটিও SAT-এর মতো একটি standardized test) অবশ্যই লাগবে, যদি তুমি এই universityগুলোতে apply করতে চাও।

4️⃣ Fourth, how to prepare for the SAT:
সত্যি বলতে এক একজনের preparation strategy এক একরকম থাকে। এই পোস্টে আমি নিজে যে strategy follow করে 1550 পেয়েছি আর যে strategy follow করে আমার অনেক student 1500+ আর 1400+ পেয়েছে, সেটা share করছি (I can also vouch that it works)।

Step 1: Take a Mock Test✅
সবার প্রথমে আমাদের College Board-এ একটা student account খুলে Bluebook-এ একটা mock দিতে হবে। You ask, what’s College Board or Bluebook? College Board organizationটাই মূলত SAT examটা নেয়, আর examটা Bluebook-এই হয়। Meaning, তুমি exam center-এ গিয়ে laptop বা iPad থেকে Bluebook app দিয়ে examটা দিবে।

So, Bluebook-এই যেহেতু official examটা হয়, ওদের mockগুলোও পুরো আসল test-এর standard-এ। Anyways, back to our topic।

• প্রশ্ন আসতে পারে, preparation নেওয়ার আগেই mock কেন দিবো আমরা?

- SAT examটা আমরা যেসব exam-এ অভ্যস্ত, সেগুলো থেকে অনেক বেশি আলাদা। আর তুমি যতই practice করো না কেন, তুমি mock না দিলে fully বুঝতে পারবে না যে examটা কিরকম, প্রশ্নের ধরন কিরকম, time management কীভাবে করা লাগে, আর সবচেয়ে important, তোমার SAT-এর proficiency কেমন। তাই সবার আগে একটা mock দাও Bluebook থেকে, আর দেখো তোমার score কত আসে।
Mock দেওয়ার পর আমাদের College Board থেকে আমরা যেগুলো answer correct করেছি আর যেগুলো করতে পারিনি, সেগুলো বসে বসে analyze করা লাগবে।

Step 2: Analyze Your Mistakes✅
College Board correct answer আর incorrect answer-এর পক্ষে-বিপক্ষে যুক্তি দিয়ে explanation দেয়, কিন্তু সত্যি বলতে ওই explanationটা আমার কাছে একেবারেই কাজের লাগে না। তার থেকে ভালো, আমরা নিজেরা বসে সময় নিয়ে explore করি যে কেন আমাদের answer হয়েছে বা হয়নি। এতে করে আমাদের reasoning skills অনেক বাড়বে আর আমরা SAT-এর question patternগুলো আরো ভালো করে বুঝতে পারবো।

Step 3: Math Practice ✅
Mock দেওয়ার পর আমাদের preparation শুরু করা উচিত বাকি resources থেকে। আমি recommend করি প্রথমে Mathটা Khan Academy থেকে শুরু করা। Khan Academy-তে ৩টা করে video lesson আর তারপর কিছু question থাকে practice করার জন্য। সত্যি বলতে videoগুলোও খুব helpful না, কারণ সেগুলো খুব একটা deep-এ যায় না। Best strategy হচ্ছে direct question practice করা, আর যেটা fully না বুঝো, সেটা তোমার সাথে যারা SAT prep নিচ্ছে তাদের জিজ্ঞেস করে figure out করা, বা নিজে নিজে, বা Reddit থেকে help নেওয়া।

Step 4: English Practice ✅
Math-এর সাথে English শুরু করা উচিত Writing দিয়ে, কারণ Writingটা একটু সহজ। Writing শুরু করা উচিত Erica Meltzer’s Writing দিয়ে, তারপর Khan Academy-এর Writing। আমরা যখন Writingটা একটু mastery করে ফেলি, তখন আমাদের উচিত Reading শুরু করা। Readingও একইভাবে — প্রথমে Erica Meltzer’s Reading, তারপর Khan Academy। এরপর SAT Suite Question Bank ( practice from a website named Oneprep), PrepPros, past DSAT questions আর বাকি resources থেকে practice করা লাগবে।

Step 5: Regular Mocks ✅
আরো একটা জিনিসের খেয়াল রাখতে হবে — আমরা যেন প্রতি ১০–২০ দিনের মধ্যে একটা mock দেই। এতে আমরা track রাখতে পারবো আমাদের improvement কেমন হচ্ছে। আর যেহেতু English module-এ time management নিয়ে প্রায় সবাই একটু struggle করে, mockগুলো regularly দিলে আমাদের time managementও ধীরে ধীরে অনেক ভালো হয়ে যাবে।

5️⃣Fifth, tips & tricks for the SAT:
I. Exam আর mock দেওয়ার সময় Writing দিয়ে শুরু করো। Writing questionsগুলোতে সাধারণত সময় কম লাগে, কারণ এখানে comprehension খুব একটা লাগে না—grammar আর straight rules। Writing তাড়াতাড়ি শেষ করতে পারলে Reading-এর জন্য বেশি সময় পাওয়া যায়, যা automatically accuracy বাড়ায়।

II. Past DSAT questions যত পারো practice করো। I can’t emphasize this enough. তুমি যদি অন্য resources-এর সাথে past DSAT ভালোভাবে practice করতে পারো, তাহলে easily 1450+ possible।

III. প্রতিটা question ১০০% বুঝে এগাও। অনেক সময় এমন question পাবে যেগুলো বুঝতে অনেক কষ্ট হবে, কেউ বুঝাতেও পারবে না। তবুও skip কোরো না। একটা question বুঝতে ১–২ ঘণ্টা লাগলেও worth it—কারণ একবার বুঝে গেলে ওই type-এ আর ভুল হবে না।

IV. Desmos mastery। SAT Math এখন অনেক easy, partly Desmos-এর জন্য। এই calculator use করে অনেক কঠিন Math calculation ছাড়াই solve করা যায়। Math-এ 800 পেতে হলে Desmos MUST।
V. Bluebook mockগুলো repeat করে দাও। ৬টা শেষ করার পর আবার শুরু করলে দেখবে অনেক question ভুলে গেছো। এভাবেই বারবার mock দিয়ে practice-এ থাকতে হবে।

VI. SAT mentally খুব exhausting। Preparation-এর সময় অনেকবার মনে হবে “এটা আমার দিয়ে হবে না”—এটা normal। কিন্তু থামা যাবে না। চালিয়ে যেতে হবে, eventually mastery আসবেই।

VII. আমি personally fixed schedule follow করিনি। দিনভর SAT, research, work—এইগুলোই ছিল। কিন্তু একটা জিনিস মেনে চলতাম—reading/Writing/Math কোনোটাই যেন ২ দিনের বেশি practice ছাড়া না থাকে।

VIII. একটা ছোট group বানানোর চেষ্টা করো। সবাই dedicated হবে না, but ২–৪ জন serious মানুষ পেলেই enough। Discussion করলে difficult question অনেক সহজে clear হয়। অন্যকে help করতে গেলে নিজের skillও improve হয়।

IX. English-এর শুরুতে ৪–৬টা vocabulary question থাকে। এগুলোতে বারবার same-type words ঘুরে আসে। আমি একটা list বানিয়ে ওইগুলো মুখস্থ করেছিলাম—এতে vocabulary almost perfect হয়ে গিয়েছিল। মাঝে মাঝে revise করলেই enough।

X. Elimination process use করো। Answer কেন correct সেটা না ভেবে, কেন wrong সেটা ধরার চেষ্টা করো। অনেক সময় ছোট ছোট word ধরেই পুরো option eliminate করা যায়।

আরো অনেক technique আছে, কিন্তু আপাতত এইগুলোই main। কোনো specific question থাকলে comment করো, answer দিয়ে দিবো।
