Our Distinguished Professor and the Co-founder of the IDMVS, Dr. Mahbuba Nasreen, recently shared her valuable expert comments in The Daily Ittefaq on the critical issue of rising internal displacement.
📰 Report Title: বেড়েই চলেছে অভ্যন্তরীণ বাস্তুচ্যুত মানুষের সংখ্যা
Yesterday, Dr. Khondoker Mokaddem Hossain, Founder of Institute of Disaster Management and Vulnerability Studies, joined a critical discussion on Desh TV's "Desh Shondha." The topic was urgent and close to all our hearts: "বসবাস অযোগ্য সারিতে ঢাকা" (Dhaka in the list of unlivable cities).
With Dhaka consistently ranking among the least livable cities globally, Dr. Mokaddem highlighted the multifaceted crisis—from poor waste management to environmental degradation.
Key takeaways from Dr. Mokaddem’s talk:
A Growing Crisis: Our capital city continues to struggle, ranking near the bottom of global livability indices.
The Waste Challenge: He pointed out that scientific waste management is critically lacking, with industrial, household, and hospital waste sources remaining largely unmanaged.
The Impact of Brain Drain: An unlivable environment is driving away our brightest young minds, contributing to significant "brain drain" as they seek better conditions abroad.
The Power of Enforcement: Dr. Mokaddem emphasized that we don’t need new policies as much as we need the enforcement of existing laws. If we replicate the civic discipline we practice abroad here at home, meaningful change is possible.

Our respected Founder of the Institute of Disaster Management and Vulnerability Studies, Prof. Dr. Khondoker Mokaddam Hossain, was a featured guest yesterday on the popular DBC News talk show "Rajkahon" (রাজকাহন).
Faced with recent tragic events, the panel discussed a vital question: পাহাড় ধসে মৃত্যুর দায় কার? (Who is responsible for landslide fatalities?)
Dr. Hossain strongly highlighted the critical gaps in disaster risk reduction, urban planning, and the urgent measures needed to protect vulnerable communities living on unstable hillsides.
It was a proud moment for the institute as the entire panel comprised IDMVS minds—with renowned experts Prof. Dr. Ainun Nishat and Netai Chandra Dey Sarker (both guest teachers at our institute) joining the conversation. Together, they provided deep, actionable insights into national disaster management.
