Power Policy Innovation Challenge✨
The transition to a sustainable, reliable, and resilient energy system is critical for Bangladesh. To drive this transformation, the IEEE NSU PES Student Branch Chapter, in collaboration with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the IEEE NSU Student Branch, invites future energy leaders, researchers, and young innovators to participate in the Power Policy Innovation Challenge on 23rd October 2026 and 31st October 2026 at North South University.
This year's challenge is about connecting rural and community grids with microgrids. Local generation from small producers, villages, and urban communities can be linked to the main power grid, so that clean, reliable, and affordable electricity reaches more people while communities take part in producing and managing their own energy.
This challenge aims to bring together innovative minds to identify pressing challenges in Bangladesh’s power sector and develop practical, affordable, technically feasible, and policy-oriented solutions for a sustainable energy future.
This exciting competition brings you a prize pool of a total 65 thousand BDT.
🏆Champion: 30,000 BDT
🥇1st Runner-up: 20,000 BDT
🥈2nd Runner-up: 15,000 BDT
Important Dates:
Registration Period: October 8 - October 16, 2026
Submission Deadline: October 16, 2026, 11:59 PM (GMT+6)
Team Requirements:
1. Each team must consist of 2-3 members. Solo entries are not allowed.
2. Cross-university teams are allowed.
3. Each team must have a unique team name.
The Challenge
Identify a pressing issue in Bangladesh's power sector, particularly in connecting rural and community grids with microgrids, and propose a solution that can create meaningful, measurable, and sustainable impact.
Your proposal should bridge the gap between technology and policy, while balancing technical feasibility, economic viability, affordability, scalability, and real-world implementation.
Key Focus Areas
Renewable Energy & Storage: Solar, wind, hybrid energy systems, and grid-stabilizing energy storage solutions.
Grid Modernization & EV Integration: Modernizing existing power infrastructure and enabling the effective integration of electric vehicles and emerging electric mobility solutions.
Community & Micro-Generation: Agrivoltaics, urban community energy systems, distributed generation, microgrid connection with rural and community grids, and empowering small-scale energy producers.
Sustainable Economics: Low-carbon technologies, emission reduction strategies, sustainable energy financing, and ensuring nationwide energy affordability.
Competition Stages
Round 1, Stage 1: Abstract Submission (Online)
Teams submit an abstract presenting their proposed idea, the problem it addresses, its expected impact, and its intended application sector.
No registration fee for this stage.
The Top 20 teams are selected from the submitted abstracts to advance to Round 2.
Round 1, Stage 2: Qualification Fee
Selected teams pay BDT 2,500 per team to confirm their place (only if selected after Stage 1).
Selected teams do not need to register for the PPIS Grand Finale. Only the competition fee applies.
Round 2: Top 20 Pitch (Competition Day)
The Top 20 teams present their policy and technology-driven solutions before a jury of professionals and experts.
After the presentations, the Top 5 teams advance to the Grand Finale.
Grand Finale: Top 5 Defense
The Top 5 finalists give an intensive final presentation and defense, where they present, justify, and defend their proposed solutions before distinguished industry experts and researchers.
A dedicated Poster Showcase Corner gives finalists the chance to visually present their ideas, key findings, and proposed solutions to attendees and fellow participants.
Abstract Submission Requirements
For Round 1, each team must submit an abstract of 400–450 words addressing all four of the following points:
1. Idea
- Briefly describe your proposed idea, innovation, or solution.
2. Problem Solving
- Clearly explain the problem your idea addresses and how your proposed solution can effectively address or solve it.
3. Expected Outcome
- Describe the expected impact, benefits, and potential results of implementing your proposed solution.
4. Application Sector
- Specify the sector or area where your idea will be applied, such as Rural, Urban, Industry, Agriculture, Healthcare, Education, or any other relevant sector.
***All four sections are mandatory and must be addressed within the 400-450 word limit***
Evaluation Criteria
Submitted solutions will be evaluated based on their potential to achieve the following outcomes:
Increase renewable energy capacity and adoption
Reduce CO₂ emissions and fossil-fuel dependence
Create green jobs and local economic opportunities
Strengthen energy sovereignty, security, and system resilience
Promote affordable and inclusive energy solutions
Address technical, financial, and policy implementation challenges
Encourage community participation and local energy ownership
