Any language changes over time. The changes are measured or compared. For example, English in Indian sub-continent under the British Colonisation or the changes from Old English to Middle English or Modern English are all discussed, researched and analysed in Contrastive linguistics.

Listening between Bangla and English

If we compare English in terms of listening skill with Bangla and probably most of the other languages what we can realise is that listening skill in English is much more difficult and complex than probably in all the others.

Imagine an English who is practicing Bangla and has already developed somewhat listening skill, can equally understand some one’s speech as a part of dialogue, news presentation, music/songs, a lecture delivery, discussions on religion, sports and diseases, expressing satisfaction, dissatisfaction, failure and success.

It is so mostly because the pronunciation of every word in these different situations is almost the same and the speed is also relatively the same.

At the same time there is no form of contraction in Bangla. The difference between formal and informal Bangla in conversation or in any other situation is almost the same whether it is a song, news presentation, dialogue in a drama or quarrelling among people.

On the other hand, look at the same situation in listening in any of the situations the pronunciation, the speed and especially the informal English vary from situation to situation in English.

An English learner finds pronunciation easy in news presentation but the structure and the diction (the choice of words) make him fail to understand the news.

He will find difficulty in understanding a dialogue in a drama or conversation because the pronunciation will be very condensed and contracted, the speed will be too fast.

If he watches a film on television, he will find the pronunciation too tricky and contracted (I’ll, I’m, I can’t, I won’t, I’ve, I’d) and the dialogues so fast.

Above all, consider English music whether it is rock and roll or hard or soft, the pronunciation will deem too tricky. In an English song we usually find some muttering sound mixed with music and the use of contraction and the informal language structure mixed with slang.

No matter how much he is proficient in listening to news, watching dramas or films, he will be unable to understand most of the English music.

He will also face trouble because of the differences between British, American and Australian English languages in pronunciation, spelling. vocabulary and structure.

সাপ দেখলে একটি ট্রেনের কথা মনে হয়। আবার একটি ট্রেন দেখলে একটি সংসারের কথা মনে হয়। একটি ট্রেনে একটি ইঞ্জিন থাকে। একটি সাপেরও একটি মাথা থাকে।

লম্বা ট্রেনের সামনের বগিটাই ট্রেনটির ইঞ্জিন যা চমৎকারভাবে সর্পিল গতিতে চলমান রাখে। কিন্তু দুই মাথায় যদি দু’টি ইঞ্জিন থাকে তবে ট্রেনটি কোনদিকেই এগুবে না। তবে একটি নষ্ট হলে আরেকটির প্রয়োজন হবে।

তেমনিভাবে সংসারের স্বামী-স্ত্রীকে দু’টি ইঞ্জিন ধরলে একটি ইঞ্জিন চলমান রেখে অপরটি বন্ধ রাখা সমীচীন হবে। একক্ষেত্রে আসল বিষয় হলো কোন ইঞ্জিন বেশী কার্যকর সেটিকেই কম্পিউটারের ভাষায় ডিফল্ট রাখতে হবে।

Contrastive linguistics deals with both similarities and dissimilarities between two languages. Its linguistic approach is practice-oriented. Diachronic linguistics and synchronic linguistics are its main variations.

Contrast is widely discussed in different fields such as paragraph writing, colour adjustment/combination/permutation and display-light adjustment. It is also deeply, critically and analytically discussed in contrastive linguistics occasionally called differential linguistics.
