এই পৃথিবীতে যার কাছে কিছুই নেই, তার কাছে আছে শূন্য! শূন্য আমাদের সবারই খুব আপন। যেকোনো হিসাবের ক্ষেত্রে হোক, ঈদের দিনের সালামি হোক কিংবা ফেইসবুক স্ট্যাটাসের লাইক সংখ্যা হোক- আমরা এমন একটি সংখ্যা কামনা করি যার শেষে থাকবে শূন্য! কিন্তু, যেকোনো সংখ্যার শেষে শূন্য আমাদের কাম্য হলেও, শুধুমাত্র শূন্য আমাদের কারোই কাম্য নয়! শূন্যকে একা দেখতে আমরা নারাজ। কারণ, তখন কি যেন একটা নেই বলে মনে হয়। আর, এমনটি মনে হবেই বা না কেন? শূন্য মানেই তো 'কিছুই নেই'. আর, আজকে আমরা এই শূন্যকে একা রেখেই অনেক ভগর ভগর করতে চলেছি!

প্রায় সবার কাছে এই শব্দ তিনটি খুব পরিচিত। গণিত, পদার্থ, রসায়ন প্রভৃতি প্রায় সকল শাখায়-ই এই তিনটি শব্দের বহুল ব্যবহার রয়েছে। এক কথায় কিছু জেনে রাখা ভালোঃ
১. পরিসীমা হচ্ছে সরলরৈখিক একটা কিছু। এর মাত্রা "এক"
২. ক্ষেত্রফল হচ্ছে দ্বিমাত্রিক একটা কিছু। এর মাত্রা "দুই"
৩. আয়তন হচ্ছে ত্রিমাত্রিক একটা কিছু। এর মাত্রা "তিন"
