โHeat, Health and Dignity: Urban Heat Stress as a Systemic Risk Amplifierโ
at CBA20 โ Community-Based Adaptation Conference, taking place on
๐ 12th May | 1:30 PM โ 3:00 PM
๐Manila, Philippines.
Together with Victoria University of Wellington, Bring Back Green Foundation, Shack Dwellers International Kenya (SDI-K), Philippine Red Cross, and CARE Iraq.
This session examines the growing climate risk of urban heat through the lenses of public health, urban governance and structural conditions in fast-growing secondary cities and informal settlements across six distinct geographies spanning Kenya, Philippines, Ghana, NE India,Bangladesh and Iraq.
Rising temperatures have shifted from seasonal discomfort to daily health and livelihood risk, particularly for informal and frontline workers exposed to heat in infrastructure-poor environments.

The PARIBARTAN Project organized a 2-day Political Economy Analysis (PEA) for Locally Led Adaptation (LLA) workshop with Kalibari WAMG at the Codec Training Centre on 22nd and 23rd April. Around 20 participants, including trial farmers, interested farmers, and change agents, joined the discussions to understand local perspectives, identify suitable crops, and assess the challenges ahead for the Aus and Aman seasons.
During the sessions, farmers openly shared their experiences from the previous Rabi season and discussed potential crops, feasibility studies, seasonal risks, crop varieties, trial farmer selection methods, and even the impacts of the global fuel crisis on agriculture. They actively participated in diverse group works and confidently presented their findings in front of others. They also shared honest opinions about the change agent and trial farmer selection process.
Important local challenges were identified, including heavy rainfall damaging seedbeds, delayed operation of sluice gates, canals blocked by water hyacinth, and limited access to proper agricultural knowledge and technologies. Farmers also assessed which crops are best suited for different land elevations based on yield, timing, and quality. Discussions on integrated farming and soil testing opened new perspectives, as many participants realized the importance of soil health for the first time. Farmers also expressed deep concern about how the ongoing global fuel crisis could severely impact agriculture and rural livelihoods in the coming seasons.
One farmer shared:

A successful one-day training on the Preparation of Maize Silage as Cattle Feed was organized by the PARIBARTAN Project on 21 April 2026 at Monir Jamaddarโs house in Gulishakhali, Amtali, Barguna. Farmers from Gulishakhali and Kalibari WAMG came together, including maize trial farmers, learning farmers, interested cattle owners, along with invited Upazila Sub-Assistant Agricultural Officers, to learn about a game-changing technique for securing quality feed for their livestock.
The workshop focused on the importance of silage, step by step methods to prepare and store maize silage, optimal feeding practices, market selling strategies, and how women farmers can particularly benefit by saving time while ensuring their cattle receive nutritious feed all year round. Participants also learned about using other crops for silage and the best practices to optimize its benefits.
Farmers shared that they previously had no idea about silage, but now they understand how it can provide high quality cattle feed at minimal cost. One female farmer, inspired by the workshop, remarked:
Key Takeaways: Farmers left equipped with practical knowledge to cultivate maize, prepare silage for future use, reduce feed costs, improve cattle health, and even create new income opportunities through silage production and sales.

The PARIBARTAN Team recently organized a vibrant 2-day workshop on Political Economy Analysis for Locally Led Adaptation with the enthusiastic members of Gulishakhali WAMG at the Codec Training Centre on 19th and 20th April.
Around 20 participants, including trial farmers, interested farmers, and change agents, came together to engage in an in-depth discussion on the upcoming Aus and Aman seasons while sharing their experiences from the previous Rabi season. During the session, they identified and ranked the major challenges expected in the Aus and Aman seasons, explored suitable crop varieties and farming methods along with their feasibility, and discussed the process for selecting trial farmers. Participants also analyzed key issues such as the impact of the international fuel crisis, limited access to quality seeds, heavy rainfall, labor shortages, insect attacks, and the need for early harvesting. At the end of the session, both trial and non-trial farmers shared their experiences and lessons learned from the Rabi season.
The energy was incredible, with farmers remaining highly engaged throughout the session through dynamic group work with diverse members and confidently presenting their ideas. For the Aman season, they discussed different rice varieties, some maturing early, others producing less straw or being vulnerable to rats, and collectively decided which crops and varieties would best suit their local conditions. Integrated farming was also introduced, and a powerful discussion on soil testing created strong awareness among the participants.
One interested farmer shared:

How can canal restoration strengthen climate resilience while ensuring justice and equity?
This policy brief draws lessons from the Governance for Climate Resilience (G4CR) initiative in coastal Bangladesh , showing that nature-based solutions work best when combined with inclusive governance and locally led adaptation.
Evidence from Munshiganj Union, Shyamnagar highlights how restoring canals as climate-resilience commons can improve freshwater access, support agriculture, revive ecosystems, and strengthen community resilience while addressing unequal power dynamics and elite capture of resources.
