While we may have a ce

rtain level of fluency or understanding in our native language, we struggle with figurative language in English. Engaging in unfounded or incorrect speech provides minimal assistance or benefit. Speaking should always be fluent, constructive, and informative, regardless of language. An individual acquires the skill through repeated application, and we assert that the most efficient approach to practice is by engaging in English practice activities. As we approach the department's 7th anniversary, providing students with language proficiency opportunities is essential and laying the foundation for a strong legacy for future generations. DJSEF will serve as a hub for the generation of ideas, the cultivation of debates, and the easing of uneasiness towards the English language. Enter a realm where dialogue is elevated to an artistic expression, and each individual's perspective harmoniously contributes to the symphony of thoughts. We advance towards the future guided by the motto- “Let English be the Bridge.

Decode the Myth, Learn the Idiom

Trojan Horse

According to Greek mythology, the Trojan War had dragged on for ten years with neither the Greeks nor the Trojans able to claim victory. Unable to break through the massive walls of Troy, the Greeks devised a clever plan. Following the advice of Odysseus, they built a gigantic wooden horse, hid a group of elite soldiers inside it, and pretended to sail away, leaving the horse behind as an offering.

The Trojans believed they had finally won the war. Despite warnings from the priest Laocoön and the prophet Cassandra, they dragged the horse inside the city as a symbol of victory. That night, while the people of Troy celebrated and slept, the hidden Greek soldiers climbed out of the horse, opened the city gates, and allowed the returning Greek army to enter. Troy was captured and destroyed from within.

That’s where the phrase “Trojan horse” comes from. Today, it refers to something that appears harmless or beneficial but secretly carries a hidden danger or deceptive purpose. In cybersecurity, a Trojan horse is a type of malicious software disguised as a legitimate program to trick users into installing it. Ironically, the original myth isn’t just about clever strategy—it’s a warning that the greatest threats often come disguised as gifts, and that blind trust can lead to disaster.

Decode the Myth, Learn the Idiom
Some expressions have survived for thousands of years, carrying stories far older than the languages we speak today. In this series, we'll uncover the myths behind these timeless idioms—and discover what they were originally meant to teach.
The Midas Touch
According to Greek mythology, King Midas was a wealthy ruler of Phrygia who showed kindness to Silenus, the companion of the wine god Dionysus. As a reward, Dionysus granted him one wish, and Midas wished that everything he touched would turn to gold.
At first, he loved it, turning branches, stones, and even flowers into gold. But the gift quickly became a curse when his food and drink also turned to gold. In some versions of the story, he even turned his own daughter into gold with a hug. Horrified, Midas begged Dionysus to take the gift back. Dionysus told him to wash in the River Pactolus, where the curse was removed, and the river's sands were said to contain gold afterward.
That's where the phrase "the Midas touch" comes from. Today, it describes someone who seems to succeed in everything they do, especially in business or making money. Ironically, the original myth isn't about success at all. It's a warning about greed and how getting exactly what you wish for can sometimes become a curse.
