The NYBB National Inter-School Biotechnology Quiz Competition Concludes: St. Joseph Higher Secondary School Crowned Champion

For the first time in the country, a school-level competition dedicated to biotechnology "1st National Inter-School Biotechnology Quiz Competition" was successfully held. Organized jointly by the Network of Young Biotechnologists Bangladesh (NYBB) and United International University, the competition saw participation from more than fifty schools from different parts of the country.

At the final stage of the event held today, St. Joseph Higher Secondary School, Dhaka emerged as the champion. The runner-up positions were secured respectively by Armed Police Battalion School and College, Bogura; Dhaka Cantonment Girls’ Public School and College; and Phulki Shohojpath Bidyalay, Chattogram.

More than fifty students from twelve districts across Bangladesh participated in the four-round competition. Following the quarterfinals, semifinals, and final rounds held at the national level in Dhaka, six teams advanced to the grand finale. The other finalist teams included Pledge Harbor International School, Bangladesh International School and College, Jalsiri, Dhaka Cantonment Girls’ Public School and College, Armed Police Battalion School and College, Bogura, and Phulki Shohojpath Bidyalay, Chattogram.

The event was inaugurated in the morning by Dr. S. M. Rafiqul Islam, Head of the Department of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering at United International University. Opening remarks were delivered by NYBB Executive Officer Anik Saha and Zahin Alam, a faculty member of United International University.

Following the inauguration, a special workshop on Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering was conducted in the laboratory by the faculty members and students of United International University. The four-round competition included a wide range of questions related to the applications of biotechnology, covering topics such as botany, zoology, human physiology, pathology, environment, marine biology, microbiology, bioinformatics, and various other branches of science. The quiz was conducted by students of the University of Dhaka affiliated with NYBB. The program was hosted by Mahin Rana, Chandrabindu andcountry The chief guest at the prize-giving ceremony was renowned geneticist Dr. Abed Chowdhury, Director of the Grant for Advanced Research under the Ministry of Education. The session was chaired by Dr. Mustak Ibn Ayub, Director of NYBB and faculty member of the Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology at the University of Dhaka. Special guest Dr. M. A. Majid, Advisor to the Faculty of Life Sciences at United International University, was also present.

Speakers at the program expressed optimism that biotechnology would make significant contributions to Bangladesh’s economy in the future. They noted that initiatives like this for school students can play an important role in popularizing science education. They also emphasized the need for more such events in educational institutions. According to the speakers, the enthusiasm and participation of students from different regions of Bangladesh clearly demonstrate the growing popularity of scientific learning and research in the country. The event concluded with the distribution of prizes among the winners. The program was supported by BGI Tech China and Aristopharma Limited.
