National Conference on Imaging Bangladesh Urbanization: Reality and Vision

On 13 May 2012, CUS organized a National Conference on Imaging Bangladesh Urbanization: Reality and Vision at CIRDAP Auditorium Dhaka to inaugurate its 40th Founding Anniversary celebration. Emeritus Professor of Dhaka University and Chairman, Bangla Academy Dr. Anisuzzaman delivered a speech in the Conference as Chief Guest. The inaugural session of the Conference was presided over by the Chairman of the Centre, Professor Nazrul Islam. The one-hour Inaugural session was devoted to the chequrd history of CUS. Dr Nurul Islam Nazem, Honorary Secretary of the Centre briefly highlighted the achievement of the Centre. Other founding members of the Centre recalled the growing of the CUS over the last 40 years. The session was participated by about 150 people, all were either member or well wisher of the Centre.

The Inaugural Session was started with a brief musical programme performed by the students of the Department of Music, Dhaka University, under the leadership of Ms. Mitali Nasrin, an assistant Professor of the same Department.

Apart from the Inaugural, the Conference had three brief sessions. The second session was moderated by Dr. Sarwar Jahan, Professor of URP, BUET and Former president of BIP. Professor Nazrul Islam, Honorary Chairman of the Centre presented the theme paper on the Pattern of Bangladesh Urbanization: Reality and Vision. The paper was discussed by a number of scholars such as Dr. Hussain Zillur Rahman, Professor Golam Rahman, Planner Shaokot Ali Khan, Professor Abul kalam, Dr. Hemayet Hossain, Architect Tanweer Nawaz, Dr. Nurul Islam Nazem, Professor Golam Murtaza, Mr. MQ Khan and Professor Mesbah us Saleheen.

The third Session was on Issues in Urbanization: The reality and Vision. The theme paper was presented by Architect Salma Shafi, Treasurer CUS. The session was moderated by Architect Khadem Ali, Sr. Vice Chairman of the Centre. The issues and visions were discussed by Professor ATM Nurul Amin, Professor Golam Murtaza, Mr. Abdul Haque, Architect Tanweer Nawaz, Architect Shahidul Ameen, Architect Iqbal Habib, Professor Farzana Islam and Mitali Nushrat Parvin.

An important part of the third session was the discussion on the issues of heritage and aesthetics in the city. Professor Bulbon Osman, Architect Abdus Salam, Professor Sharif Uddin Ahmed, Artist Qazi Salauddin, Artist Hamiduzaman Khan and Freedom Fighter Mr. Nurul Qadir took part in the interesting part of the Session.

The final session was a brief Concluding Session. The Session was presided over by the Chairman of CUS, while Dr. Khondker Shaukat Hossain, Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Public Works, Government of Bangladesh graced the session as Chief Guest.

The deliberations in the conference were lively and contextual in visioning the reality and the future of urbanization in Bangladesh. The participants praised the contribution of CUS and wished CUS a long life.
