Today, on December 2, we honor the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, a solemn reminder of humanity’s long struggle for freedom and dignity.
On this day in 1949, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 317(IV)—a landmark step that forged the first international convention dedicated to dismantling human trafficking and affirming the inherent worth of every human being. It was a promise to the world that exploitation would never again be tolerated.
Yet, decades later, that promise remains painfully unfulfilled.
According to the Global Estimates of Modern Slavery, 50 million people are still living in conditions that rob them of their freedom—10 million more than just five years ago. Among them, 28 million endure forced labor, while 22 million are trapped in forced marriages. These are not mere statistics; they are human lives—betrayed by systems that allow traffickers and exploiters to reap $236 billion in illicit profits every year, reducing people to economic assets instead of recognizing them as bearers of rights and dignity.
As we stand on the threshold of 2026, the centenary of the historic 1926 Slavery Convention, this moment demands far more than commemoration. It calls for urgency, resolve, and unwavering commitment. For the global legal community, the challenge is clear: move beyond symbolic recognition and ensure that legal standards are enforced with strength, integrity, and compassion.
Only through steadfast accountability and robust implementation can we honor a century of legal progress—and finally break the structures that perpetuate modern human enslavement.
